Driving a 2.8 SWB pajero at the mo and its a bit tired and also the insurance isn't getting any cheaper (im only 20)

Wanting to go to a smaller engine 4x4 again.

My options are:-

Sportrak - Seem rare and rusty
Vitara - Seems decent, drove my dads in the summer
Rav 4 - only thing putting me off is its permanent four wheel drive
Honda CRV - Ive read lots and lots of reviews and hardly any are bad so don't laugh!

Ive got a 6x4 tipping trailer that weighs 500kg unladen so it needs to pull that easy, also my price range is a maximum of £1200 so anything I get will be around 100K mileage.

which would you guys recommend?

thanks
Muffin

I would leave the Sportrak and go fourtrak instead, much better.
Vitatra...nooooo not standard anyway so just for off road fun, handle like a jelly on wheels lol.
Rav4 nah not for me, gutless on power for towing big stuff.
same as Honda.

Best to stick with the shoggy, you get a lot for the money than the others and more Smile

im very wary of buying anything like a shoggy/fourtrak/terrano because they all seem to be rotten in one way or another

I don't mind mechanical work but I cannot stand repairing rust so anything that is prone to rust is a no-go.

Im not doing any off roading and not even green laning probably (theyre all getting should down near us anyway) so I just want something with a smaller engine that's a bit more nimble and not prone to rotting the way that everything else does!

Frontera 2.2dti?

Good solid trucks, not bad for rot and the 2.2 isn't a bad engine. Not personally driven one though. Bare in mind something with a smaller engine might actually cost you more in fuel when towing if you are having to work it hard.

Or if you want to take the chance card get a 3.0 DOHC Trooper. Primitive common rail engine so its about the best you will get on fuel and its all torque. However you can have a lot of issues with them, pot luck for a good one really.

I wont be towing a lot, only maybe once twice a month with the odd loads of logs or top soil ect. I just need something that is capable of doing that only would be a tonne load.

I can manage without towing the trailer if it has enough room inside and is strong enough to carry logs inside!

Have been looking at the 2 litre non turbo forester (yet to do an insurance quote though Shocked)

Basically im asking whats the most reliable and 'bullet proof' with basic servicing and maintenance? Read all the reviews and the most reliable are looking the Honda, Toyota, vitara and forrester. Any actual experience with them?!

The Vitara is very simple to service, its an old fashioned vehicle with loads of room in the engine bay. They do rot around the inner wheel arches and the rear seat belt mounts.

Disco 1 Tdi would seem to fit your requirements.
