Hi all
I got a 1999 1.6 vitara. After some heavy duty off roading last weekend I managed to distroy the front diff.
I'm just wondering I keep hearing about steel front diff casings but can't seem to find one can anyone help.
Someone mentioned a grand vitara diff can this be used ????
I've been told I need to put all my internal stuff into the steel casing. Is this something I can do or do I need to get someone else to do it
I would appreciate as much help as poss as I want to get back out in it
Thanks darren. And if anyone has one IM INTRESTED

the steel housings are from LWB diesel vitaras, and LWB Diesel and V6 Grand Vitaras.
Getting the internals swapped is a specialist job, Rockwatt on here can do them.
Yours will most likely be a 4.88 26 spline diff.

I have just got my steel casing and put a spare 4u2 diff into mine after breaking the casing and shaft.
I put on an old ally one after the first break but despite doing more serious stuff have not broken it as yet.
it is a specialist job to transfer to bits over but I got a chap close to me who did it quickly and easily, where are you?
it is worth getting a steel one but they are not cheap.

I used a steel housing out of a GV for my Vit when i broke mine - believe it came off of a V6 model but i'm not 100% on that.
The mount on the diff casing ( furthest one from front ) did not match my mounting bracket though so had to build a new bracket (replacing a calmini bracket). Was a bit of a fiddle so might be worth checking on anything you find. TBH i've googled around and seems most have the right mounts? So not sure what i've ended up with so you'll probably be fine. There was an extra hole in the housing for the airline to the GV diff which can be bunged up (don't need it once a vit diff is in there) - i think i put a bolt in the place of the nozzle. Note this is not the breather.
I swapped over the interals myself. It was quite involved and i did lots of research before hand having never done anything like it before. It's still going now - but i'd say if in doubt get someone who knows what they're doing to do it for you.

That'll be out of the XL7 - they have a different 3rd member mount. They'll bolt right up if you get the bracket too.

Hi all thanks for your help with this diff problem
I would just like you to clarify I've just located a steel front diff of a
1999 gv 2.0 turbo diesel
Is the the right diff case to use.
I presume I just need to fit my inners out of my diff
And away I go. Please clarify ASAP as.
The diff is £200 Is this the right price to pay.
Thanks darren

Here you go, from the SS archives... |
Thanks. Explains that then - didn't have the bracket with it - should have asked for it and saved myself some time! Hindsight eh.
