How's it going people, been lurking for quite a while now and thought it was about time I did a thread on my Daishitsu... She was pretty standard when I got my hands on it apart from some lifted springs and a swap for the non-turbo motor as someone ventilated the block of the old one with one of the rods somehow Shocked And don't be fooled by it's tidy looks, the left sill was more bog than metal and there was various other bogged spots hiding under the primer Sad

As you could imagine it didn't stay like this for long. Removed bumpers, anti roll bar and fitted 31" mud tyres.

That still didn't quite fulfil my desires so bought a set of 33" Wrangler MTR's for it and they fitted with a slight trim of the front arches. Also refitted front bumper after a trim to avoid attention from those people with the funny flashing lights... Laughing

But they didn't cut the mud-stard for offroad use as they were too wide and not aggressive enough so they were ditched for a bigger set of the ones it had before Very Happy

That about brings it up to date, have recently fitted a 2" bodylift as well in preparation for the set of tyres I just bought for it which are 36x12.5R15 Super Swamper TSL's. Bought the remains of an old Daihatsu F20 for the diffs, I am going to try and swap the ring and pinions into the F70 diffs. I have seen a few people on here say they should fit but no concrete evidence so I hope it works as the 40% reduction will be very useful for the big tyres. Also have a factory PTO winch setup to fit after I fabricate a cradle/mount for it to bolt onto the chassis as the standard one sticks out like a park bench seat! Laughing

I haven't been on here in a while, but it looks as though you are having some fun with your 4trak. Hope to see it finished.

The vacumn 4wd engagement on my F78 has never worked 100% since I got it so I pulled it apart yesterday and gave the solenoids a good clean and lube, and then put it back together. It now works perfectly! Although I did have the full factory manual with diagrams of the vacumn lines Wink It really isn't that complicated, the manual explains exactly how it works and even I could understand it Shocked Laughing If anyone wants to see it I could get some pics and put in the sticky thread?

I can't help myself. Tyres are like a certain part of the female anatomy, once you play with them for a while you just want bigger ones! Laughing

Haven't really done any mods to the mighty fourtrak recently, I had about 3t of tractor/trailer behind it yesterday and it towed it beautifully! I have given the power screw a slight tweak (half a turn) but reluctant to fiddle with it too much in case I melt pistons, anyone else able to give me an idea on what the limit is before the EGT's get too high? Wink

Time for an update! Very Happy Haven't done much until recently... A couple of weeks ago I spotted a set of 5 15x8 Globe alloy rims on NZ's version of Ebay (Trademe), 5 stud alloys are hard enough to find let alone a full matching set and only cost me $200 to my door. I needed some tyres to fit to them so kept an eye out on TM, spotted a set of as new 32x11.5 AT's for $600 so picked them up on Friday and got them fitted up on Saturday. Swapped them over on the same day. They are quite aggressive for an AT so should be reasonable offroad and they are still very civilised onroad. Yes that is another Fourtrak lurking in the background... Wink

Spotted a 1990 F75 Fourtrak on TM last week in for $500. The ad said it ran great but was no longer roadworthy. This was my reaction upon seeing it... Mr. Green

Unfortunately I did not have space for it, I had picked up an SJ410 flatdeck off TM a few months ago with a broken rear diff housing and the intention was to fix that and turn it into a bush truck but I kind of lost interest and it was just sitting in the shed so listed that on TM and sold it for $1k, so I dropped that off to new owner which freed up the garage for the new truck.

Once that was gone I went and picked up the Fourtrak. It had been a farm hack for a few years so the interior is rough and filthy and there was a 6" layer of mud underneath it. I spent about $30 at the local washworld to get rid of the bulk of it for now and will give it a proper clean when I get time. From what I can see the body is quite straight and it appears to be rust free underneath although I won't know for sure until I get it properly clean. The motor runs mint and is the 2.8 turbo so shouldn't have too much trouble turning a set of muddies. As previously mentioned it is not roadworthy at the moment but it shouldn't be too much trouble to put it back on the road. The '95 tows things like a dream and will do 100k's no worries even with a decent load on.

And to finish off the weekend I gave the '95 a good scrub this morning to clean off the cow **** and dust from many km's on rural gravel roads. Very Happy

Sorry to revive an old thread.... but im lost searching for answers on the F20 ring an pinion into the Rocky axles!

How did it go? Any tricks as it seems the pinion needs to have some spacers between the pinion teeth and the bearing. Any idea on spacer size and what to use?

Stolen from elsewhere:

"The axles on the petrol and diesel fourtraks are the same but the diff ratios (ring and pinion) are different. Diesels are 3.3:1 and petrols are 3.9:1 so around a 20% reduction with the petrol axles. F50 has a similar ratio to the diesel fourtrak but if you can find an F20 the diffs are 4.7:1 however the half shafts have a different number of splines to the fourtrak so the ring and pinion will need swapping to the fourtrak carrier."

Thanks, I've now done it so I can provide the info and save someone the headache.

Put F20 ring and pinions (4.7) using the carrier from the original axle.

The modification that you have do is take the original pinion bearing and spacer, and press it onto the the F20 pinion. Before you start you need to get shims to space this out a little bit. I had a couple of 1mm spacers and 4mm one. Trial and error to get it right.

While I was at it I can also confirm that the rear LSD can be mounted in the font axle so I now have double LSDs (had a spare rear axle). I have a solid front axle, not sure what model as they are under a Samurai.

We tried to tighten the LSDs by 0.03mm but this didn't do much. Will try 0.1mm.

Regards, Ed

I tightened my fourtrak diff by 1.6mm...or may have been 1.8mm? either way it was just whatever size wire i had in the welder at that time... Laughing

That's a big welder you have to take 1.8mm wire... What are you welding with it on a car?
