Read elsewhere:


expect 0.75 to 0.81 ohms between the side terminals and 10k or 11k ohms between output and side terminal. I'm getting 2.65 and 7,350 respectively.

a. Is my testing info correct
b. Am I right in thinking my coil is fried?

Would a weak or inconsistent spark lead to a sooty spark plug?

You are testing it right and that sounds way out to me!!!
What is your spark like? Orange or blue?

I would advise getting an MSD blaster coil... stuck one on my samurai and its made a world of difference over the old stock coil!!!
Bright red coil might be a bit garish for your Alldays though Razz

I spoke to an 'expert' who seemed to think that a coil would kill a battery in about 5 miles and simply denied it had been possible for me to drive for 6 or 7 hours and still show over 12v on a 22Ah gel battery.

Consensus remains that the coil is fried.

I've not tested the spark at the plug except in as much as I grabbed it and didn't much of a shock!

I'm not sure I would get any benefit from a blaster coil, although the only Bosch coil available locally is a blue coil which is uprated.

Depends how much the bosch coil costs really... think they are about £35
I got quoted the same price for a replacement stock coil for my samurai... thought it was worth an extra £15 for the blaster!
Ive got a whopping great blue spark now though!!!

Apparently the bosch blue coils produce about 18KV... so the 45KV blaster may indeed give you a bigger spark!!!

Up to 45kV. The real issue is the amount of energy provided, the spark will jump the gap when the voltage is sufficiently high enough so the actual voltage is determined by the spark plug gap and the conditions within the combustion chamber, including the spark plug temperature.
Personally I have had very good results with the Bosch Blue coil on old 8V engines but it does take a lot more power so you need a good electrical system.
A typical OEM 70s coil would have an input resistance of around 4.5 Ohms and a Bosch Blue coil around 3 Ohms. A coil with a primary resistance of 0.7-0.8V would be an EFI coil and needs to be controlled by an ECU, otherwise it will burn out.
