Right getting a bit fed up of the judder on the steering on my defender td5 110.

Heres the info...

at around 50 im getting juddering through the steering wheel, I have done the following to stop it.
1) new ball joints
2) new tie rod
3) new discs
4) new tyres
5) tracked
6) new steering box
7) new steering lower colum
Cool new drop arm
9) new rtc damper
10) new radius arms
11) new radius arm bushes

have checked the kingpins in the traditional way grab the top and bottom of the wheel and pull to find no movement both on the floor, lifted off the floor with and without the wheels on.

The front tyre pressures are at 37

The local land rover garage has no clue either.

The swivels look okay.

Can anyone out there help where even the specialist are lost.

Cheers.

Have you checked the rear wheel balance, or is it new tyres all round. Why do you run 37 psi in the tyres on the front.

New info.

It appears to be worse as you accelerate.

I read somewhere that 37 is right for the fronts on the td5 110... better pressure? ??

Factory pressures are 28 psi front so i would start there. Why not fit the spare wheel on one side on the rear, and see if helps or makes no difference. That is if the spare wheel is the same size as the rest.

Ok have now checked the tyre pressures and is better but not right. Out of interest how do you remove the lash in the steering box? I am thinking it might have a part to do with it.

Cheers

DEVELOPMENT.....

I have tightened the steering box a little bit and the steering feels nicer but this is interesting...

when I took out the tyre pressure it was better (tyres now acting like a damper I guess) but now its like it was with the high front pressure.

Completely confused now.

I believe you have to leave a little play in the box.
What pressure do you have in the rear tyres?, because without any load they do offer a lower pressure for them in the handbook.

Two things.
I run my rear tyres at 36lb.....

Have you had the shims checked at the swivels ?

Nope. This might be something to try.

Have just found a notchy ball joint on the drag link so will change that too.

As for the swivels there might be some info here too, one swivel is silver the other black but the steering is smooth from lock to lock.

I also had quite a lot of tyre wear on the inside edge (opposite side to the ball joint)

Fun and games !

Ball joint shouldn't matter.
The swivels however do. They must be shimmed correctly, the book will tell you. It doesn't matter how smooth they are, the shims need to be right.

Okay after a lot of hasle getting scales I have checked and reshimed the kingpins.

O.s = 1.8 kg
n.s = 3.2 kg.

I also discovered that the off side bearing has a "flat spot" so I will replace them soon on both sides.

Have changed the pull to now 5.5kg which I can't go any higher on one side because of the bearing hence the up coming replacement.

Word of warning to those who have followed this: when I removed the front off side caliper I split the hard line because of the stupid place that Lr positioned it. Lr wanted 33.89+vat for a replacement so make sure you have some copper pipe and have the confidence to remake the line otherwise go very carefully.

On the point of the wobble: its better but I can still feel it so I will report back when I have changed the bearings. At the moment the wobble has moved speed range to 50-55 which is positive.
