If you're talking on-road, turn by turn navigation, Google is okay so long as you have phone data & gps signal. It's great for occasional use, but can be frustrating the more use use it as it only has basic functions and will let you down in areas of poor data coverage.

If you want something more substantial, have a look at Co-Pilot in the market. As apps go it's quite expensive, but for a highly featured sat nav it's excellent.

In addition to the basics it can:
Plan multi stop journeys in advance, and save them
Optimise multi stop trips for you
Provide 3 different suggested routes with map, distance and time difference shown
Incorporate real time traffic information.

Among other things...

There are similar offerings from Garmin & Tom Tom - I've tried all 3, and Co-Pilot is my preffered.

If you want off-road nav, have a look at Backcountry Navigator Pro. It's a paid app, but uses open source OS maps or equivalent for other countries. Although it downloads the maps in the 1st instance, they can be stored on your phone for future use.

Alaric.

for on road navigation, i use Sygic Aura (full but not paid for), for GPS tracking, lanes i u se Locus Pro (full but not paid for)

i use sygic cause its quick, allows me to use different routes (so does Navigon), saves my routes automatically, altitude, time, fastest speed, avg speed, distance, duration, pace, accumulated height

i use Locus Pro cause i can change maps (OSM, google, bing, OVI - Nokia Maps, yahoo), track and save my gps routes, if i know what area i am laning in i can save tiles of that area so i dont need a data connection, i can use my own maps (if they are vector), i can setup WMS links as well

Have anyone tried Waze, and of those who have, what do you think?

Available on both Android and iPhone.

Navigon for on road navigation

MM Tracker & OSMAnd are two good offline applications. By that you can download the maps and not need a valid active data connection whilst roaming around.

MM Tracker has now had an update for those Android phones that have Kitkat. If you search on the XDA Developers Website you'd details about that application, but ISTR the author has been restricted from taking it further himself. You'd read it on that thread more.

I've tried other nav apps in the past but Navigon is the nicest I've found. I also use Ulysee to act as speedo/HUD/overlay mode when driving too... But that can want data for mapping, but I don't often bother allowing data for it Wink

Late to this thread, but I use Waze on both phone and gps enabled tablet.

To get alerts and best routing requires a data connection, for which I use phone as a mobile hotspot for the tablet, or just phone alone.

Being crowd-sourced it is pretty quick at identifying trouble spots, and waze users now supply data for googlemaps traffic flow too. Its pretty hot at recalculating alternatives, and another advantage of being crowd driven is it learns what locals do, so expect more back streets in rush hour.

I've used waze both here and abroad and it's OK but be aware that if you use it in Greece, for example, it will show all the addresses in greek!

I'm now running Sygic for sat-nav and Memory Map for OS mapping on an Android double-DIN unit.
The original author of MM tracker was prevented from developing it further because he wasn't paying a licence fee to use the mapping.
