Hi all. I'm new to the forum and pretty much also to off-roading.

I've set myself this crazy goal of owning a Volvo TGB131B (C304 long body). I already found out that these are super rare and therefore very difficult to come by. As fate would have it I stumbled upon an auction from a surplus seller in Estonia who's auctioning 3 C304's. Here's the link http://www.haamer.net/vehicles.php?ixMake=49. Two of them seem to be TGB131B's and the 3rd, with the SUV tires, looks like a TGB131A.

Since I lack experience about Volvo tgb's I cannot assess if this is a genuine opportunity or just an option to waste a lot of money. I'm calling on the experts of this forum to give me there opinion on this auction. Something along the lines of:
'Needs work but you can turn this in a good off-roader'
or
'Boy, that is just a parts box on wheel. Forget it'

Actually I'm hoping that RichardD will reply. He seems to be the TGB guru.

Sorry but I can't help because I don't understand the language the auction is in.
What is odd is the price of 600 euros when good TGBs sell for £8,000.

I'll look again on my computer later and see what I can see

The 600€ is the opening bid, Richard, on a 6 day auction - never know you could get yourself a bargain....

Edit to say they all need repair and they all run/start and drive

Other than that nothing (as with a good auction houses Rolling Eyes )

Thanks of the quick replies. Richard you can set the site language in the top right corner. There isn't much information anyway.

The 600€ is indeed the starting bid. On a previous auction in May this year the C304's went for 2500 and 3300 €.

I've had a quick look and frankly it is impossible to tell what you're getting. Things like engines and gearboxes are relatively easily found or repaired and bodywork can also be fixed. The question is what are you looking for?

I would always advise looking at the vehicle in the flesh especially when they are close to 40 years old.

Now for the interesting stuff. 2 of them have a T handled Bowden cable on the central engine cowl. If I remember correctly TGBs often had a battery disconnect beside the gear lever that was a vertical pull but those that had been rebodied also had the choke lever replaced with one in front of the central engine cover. The importance of this cannot be over stated: a rebodied TGB will probably have what is called an 'alu-zinc' body, a galvanised lower half and a aluminium rear top. The cab top will still be normal steel. This explains why the bodies are apparently rust free.

With that clue, and on the basis they start and run they are worth a punt. If they weren't in Estonia I might try to buy one!
