Hi everyone

Ok so been looking at these hand winches on ebay, basically I don't want to fit a winch to my freelander as it's will poke out the front a mile and look odd as well as add weight and insurance premiums etc.

The idea is that as an emergency get me out item for green Lanes or bad weather ie snow and ice or deep water is it worth getting one to shove in the boot on days out, it say it can pull 4 ton and can also be used with a snatch block. The freelander laden will come up at around 2.1 or so, so that on the flat is dead easy no brainier. But up an incline or some sticky mud could be a difficult task. However snatched up I'm.looking at an 8 ton flat pull

Your thoughts and experience welcome

we used to use heavy duty tirfor`s to pull these buggers up.

the towers went up and the big top was pulled up with them.

when i say heavy duty the handles were eight foot long and you had to walk back and forth as the travel was so much.

even with 40 tirfors a tent it was hard going.

Even those really cheap ones with 6 ft of thin steel rope can get you moving, as we found out the other year in the snow. Tirfer really can do the job well if you've a good strong heart! But if you are grounded out, a jack and waffle boards are also very good.
I think you would do better with a receiver hitch and rear winch though. You can give up on what you shouldn't have driven into and winch/drive out Smile
Here is the question for a front winch; "Once you have driven into something and winched in more, how do you get back out?". The only way is more forward.

Yeah I have a farm jack and waffles already the jack can be used as a winch to but it's a fair bit of fafing around when the winches are cheap enough to lob in the boot as a hit the fan item

Cheers guys think I will buy one B-)

I've got a cheap (£30) hand winch I got somewhere which will move you about 3m and I've also got a Superwinch winch-in-a-bag with a 2500kg capacity and it has done the job when I've been slightly stuck in the 110 and once when I had to move a bogged down horsebox.

Ten feet could be all it needs some times or to get it upon some waffles etc etc the one I'm looking at is 25 quid I have a portable winch that fits a towbar but that won't work forwards lol as I don't have a front mounted towbar

The car is just to new for me to cut up its the newest car I have owned (sad considering that it's 13 years old) and if it got ruined I would kick myself
