Damn thing is well and truly cream crackered atm and I'm mulling over what to do about it.
Recently I took on a savagely steep hill and when I got to the top the truck "changed up" and now seems to go from 1st to max overdrive and looses all power. I see there's some sort of fluid leak (doesn't appear to be coolant) having a slow leak onto the yard surface but the auto fluid level looks OK. Fluid looks (and tastes) like power steering but I don't want to say that definitively.
So now I'm thinking, damn thing needs a load of work done on the back of the chassis and coupled with this nightmare issue (that is frankly beyond my ken if it's deep in the trans) it's possibly time to start saving my pennies for something else.
I liked the paj very much suited my needs just fine but the beast is clearly on the road to nowhere.
Dunno what to do lads. Dunno if I should start stripping the front end to find this mysterious leak and do the other work or to just call it quits and harvest what parts I can for something else - the monster is getting well on now and it's showing it in power output and bits that need fettling on the chassis.
I had considered doing a ground up rebuild thinking that it might be quite satisfying but I think I'd probably just expose more issues and end up costing more than a newer truck to play with.
So currently I'm without a 4x4 much to my epic sadness considering I just got the swine through it's MOT (replacing starter and batteries) before this massive blaps.
Oh what a world what a world!
PS
It cycles through the gearshift without any crunches and drives along in 1st but when it tries to change up it looses all power and belches black smoke out the back like an ocean liner. I -think- I can hear a new 'squeak' coming from the front end up by cam belt cover but that might just be because I'm listening for things and you know how it goes... Engine runs OK and comes up to temp and stays there, nothing to indicate the "usual trouble" that mitsubishi's suffer from. Without starting to take apart the front end I'm lost for what to check next - I've not drained the trans sump to see if there's anything in there which might be a good idea?
Anyway damn you el paj you massive pig!

Little update lads,
After -much- ado I fixed the shifting on el Paj only to find that on my last outing I've managed to severely crack the back end of the chassis on this lump of rust - the lack of shifting gear turned out to be simply seeping metal pipework that was corroded to buggery and back. I replaced it with new hose and did a flush of the ATF fluid and replaced with dexron III (the manual/autodata lists them as DII but this appears to be in error according to the internet).
Time to go the journey methinks.
I could plate over it but honestly I spent all morning today trying to strip it back to "good metal" and there doesn't appear to be any left in the affected area. It's totally shot so I'll be putting the thing on the net (as running but needs attention) and putting what money I can get for it into a pot for something new. There are lots of new parts on my old truck.
I will miss it, out of all the vehicles I've owned so far 4x4 wise I've enjoyed this one the most (maybe because my best mate had one as well and we took the kids all over in them) but the lack of proper axles and the cornish tin worm have taken their toll and I just can't justify the spending that's going into maintaining this monster.
Does anyone have an opinion on the XJ grand cherokee "sport" 2.5 diesel? I was talking to a man who claimed his was getting 30 odd + mpg out of an engine that had done 160,000 miles - seemed crazy to me? I see there appears to be some fault/issue with no1 injector on them that happens a lot? And also that if the starter fails you have to do open heart surgery on the engine to get it out? Is that right?
Two kids now means I'll probably have to start looking at LWB trucks now which is a shame because I like the scampy look of the shorties but I think I'll bide my time and wait until my kitty is well replenished before buying anything else, not too choosy tbh don't care what it is as long as it suits my needs, had a look at a 110 but on closer inspection it had done nearly 190,000 miles and the guy still wanted the best part of five grand for it! What!!?
Anyway, that's my whine for the day, let my folly be a lesson to us all, I could have bought three pajero's for the money I've lavished on this thing during my tenure and I hope that is what will sell it as frankly I can't in good conscience sell this thing as a good runner.
It's parts now.

having experience of the jeep brand,
I would go for it,
No1 injectors don't go for a past time !
starters aren't to bad on the grand,
its the cherokee thats a complete c**t
as long as you look after coolant level, it should be fine, heads do crack
My old grand has done 200k ish
parts are no dearer than any other brand of motor

Most cars come to a point where you just can't justify fixing them, I had a Fiat that I loved for 11 years but a cambelt failure coupled with it needing servicing, MOT, Tax etc made it uneconomic. I broke it for parts and hardly put any money in to get a 3 year newer, 50,000 mile fewer car that did an extra 15mpg with a years tax and mot.
Can't help you with anything useful apart from offering empathy
I wouldn't worry too much about the mileage on a defender, I doubt it's made it to 200k on it's original parts so look for other signs of condition instead.

Have the same dilemma with the ol' Terrano.
Couldn't stand the look of the thing to start with (LWB), but they have a good reputation, are reasonable in the slippy stuff out of the box (that's the truck "out of the box" not the slippy stuff ), & you get 7 leather seats (2 of 'em heated) + air con etc. etc. all for the price of a curry!!
She's just passed the mot, but has an impressive list of advisories
Don't know weather to patch up or replace
Although battle scarred, she still feels like she'll tow the caravan up a mountain

told you to get a musso......
the ssangyong was a fix or chuck last year.
the little pin that holds the box in reverse went.
s/h box was £350
now seeing as i only paid £250 for the car and owned it for three years.....
we bought a newer daewoo musso for £500(with 6 months tax and mot), swapped all the uprated bits over in a day and scrapped the ssangyong for £200.
50 quid for three years motoring.
you could do worse. i havent been to a garage for diesel in nearly 100,000 miles.
