Hi,

Something on TV caught my attention, but too late to get a positiver fix.

As far as I can make out, there is a local political party who are demanding that ALL candidates put foreward for the next election must be women. Sorry, I missed the details.

I know there are other demands that a certain proportion of candidates must be women.

My question is ... Doesn't that contravene the SPAM Equality legislation., unless the same parameters are applied to male candidates? Eg: No more than 50% of candidates may be of one gender! Actually, when you think about it, it is not easy to specify a gender breakdown, without forcing somebody to stand who may not want to.

Personally I have no objections to being represented by a woman, provided she is the best person to do ther job. What I don't want, is to be represented by a woman (or a man) because the Party have decreed that their candidate must be of one, or the other, gender.

I believe they call it positive discrimination.

Other examples are police officers being from a certain ethnic group, the argument being that if the majority of people in a certain area are from the same group they will respond better to that officer.

Supermarkets having, for example, Polish only queues, the idea being that it makes shopping there more attractive to Polish people which gets the customers in that shop rather than a competitors.

Female drivers have to pay the same insurance as male drivers.

The problem with all of it is that someone at the top comes up with a statistical number and we have to fit into it even if thats not the best solution. I think it should all be based on statistical facts, then if anyone challenges the decision based on grounds of discrimination the numbers are there to back it up. For example, if female drivers / older drivers etc cost the insurance companies less they should pay less. If a same ethnic group or gender police officer gets a better conviction rate / lower crime rate then fine.

This is a rant that has been done thousands of times and it STILL annoys me that some, presumably left wing, bleeding heart type thinks that 'equality' is so one sided.

For example, you are much more likely to be thought racist if you are white, I cannot be from an ethnic minority (Jewish) because I am white, women are better drivers when, in fact, they are merely better insurance risks (not the same thing). Equally, women now have to pay more for life insurance despite the statistics saying they are better risks!

Equality does not exist and cannot be made to exist. Lets be honest, as 602 says how can you force a quota on recruitment except by not taking on the full number needed thus keeping the proportions 'right'.

grrrrrr. That's got me going for the day!

I believe the phrase "positive discrimination" from government was a sure sign it was going to swing right. It's a funny old existence when you have sexism and a queen.

I must be old fashioned as I believe in an equality where the best person should get the job and I don;t care who or what that is.

Anything else is social engineering in my mind.

If I were to obtain a post as a result of positive discrimination would I believe that I would have won on an open playing field?

discuss Cool

Hi,

Hey, hang on ... did I miss something? Has something changed so that youngers drivers pay less for insurance, but everrybody else pays more?

I have spent the best part of the last two years trying to get a mortgage.
I am 75, income guaranteed (as far as it can be), substantial deposit available from savings, live comfortably, can save quite a few hundreds of pounds each month, have two cars ... one new, one old but good, NO debts, and a house without a mortgage that will be sold after we move.

Whenever I have spoken to a potential lender, as soon as I mention my age, the discussion end. They do not want to know, call it prudent lending.

I have Googled AGE DISCRIMINATION. It does NOT apply to Financial Services which include Lending and Insurance. End of story.

But suddenly, I found a mortgage broker who has managed to find me a mortgage, with repayments we can afford with hands in pockets, whistling, sell present house when we feel like it. But problems ... offer must be taken up by 1st August ... vendor is having difficulty producing documents (Certs of Compliance) required by the lender ... new HMG guidelines will probably prevent us getting another mortgage offer. (IFA tells us that the lenders are now taking the cost of MOTs into account when assessing available income).

We all grow old.

Mortgages Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

I have an income, a decent one when everything is taken into account but for various clever accounting reasons only about £18k of it is taxable (rest is director's loan repayments or income from renewable energy neither of which is subject to tax). My house is worth say £500,000 and my total net household income is say £50k and I currently have an interest only mortgage with 6 years to run of £200,000. My monthly interest payments are ~£700 and if I remortgaged with a new 10 year interest only one I can save £350 per month. I can demonstrate that I am living within my means but not saving much given I have 2 teenage daughters. In theory, age 47 with a lot of assets (my father and grandfather were very successful I am relieved to say) I am a very low risk; the house is worth 2.5 times the loan amount, I have assets worth many times that (my businesses and other shared investment properties) and I have not missed a single mortgage payment on any of my homes in 30 years.

Here is the rub, despite the fact that I can afford the current payments and therefore can afford to pay half that, because they can only take taxable income into account I can only get a £50k mortgage! So apparently I have to pay the tax man £10k a year just so the damn Banks will lend me money risk free!

It makes me mad .....

If you have "a lot of assets", why the f**k are you paying 700/month in interest repayments and moaning about it......

Ditch the assets, get rid of mortgage, invest.....

If it were only that easy. For example I own a flat, along with my 2 sisters, in St Andrews theoretically worth £500k but if we sell it whilst my father is still alive we end up paying 40% tax on it ... and they do not want to sell it, ever!

I'm not pleading poverty I'm ranting about the total lack of common sense amongst lending underwriters. Computer says 'no', apparently

I hate banks, they do as they like. We moved just before the recession, the buyer was getting divorced and would pay the price so long as we got out quick. Within 2 weeks we had the money and were living with my mum & dad. We got a mortgage offer from the bank, found a house, did the deal, said yep, we'll have the money now. Unfortunately in that time all that with the banks kicked off and even though I had a written offer they refused to honour it. They agreed to make me a new offer, but I had to pay an extra 2% and put down an extra 10k deposit. I asked why and was told 'they have to lend responsibly now'. I asked why I wasn't benefiting from the tax payers bailout, I was told that money was for them not me. The result was working 3 jobs for 2 years to get squared up. Confused

Hi,

Mydaughter is going through a divorce. Idon't know if Sil jumped or was pushed, but he was ther guilty party. He is now playing hardball.

Her income is probably twice his, but he has a "new" partner, who is working, and they rent a flat. He is not contributing to the joint mortgage.

Daughter has been told that she might have to pay him maintenance. So she has decided to go "part-time", which will enable her to live more economically (fewer convenience meals, taxis, etc) reclaim child allowance for two kids, and generally have a better quality of life. She will not be much worse off financially

Daughter has been subject to "head hunting" with offers of salary £20,000 above what she gets now, but would lose the perks of working from home, so she had to decline.

There is something wrong with the present system.
