Hi all, not been about for a long time as i am busy with other interests, fishing and a kit car i got a while ago, its an classic one from 1986 with MK1 Escort running gear, so solid axle on the back end.
I am in the process of getting a 2.9i V6 for it in a few week and fitting it asap, but i am aslo wanting to widen the back end, i know there is a lot of ways to do it but one i realey like the thought of is using a MK1/2 MX5 rear subframe complete, so remove the rear axle and coil over shocks and the 5 link set up it has with wishbones to the MX5 rear end gear.
I can do this and prob get away with it as not many really know these cars and how it was from back then, but some smart **** will notice something, a sin MMm thats an MX5 back end, they didnt make them back in the early 60`s, and i want to be legit with it anyway, for that reason.
If i do this swap will i be all legal with the IVA boys? i know you can do certain things but not cut the chassis but you can add to it, this mod will not have any cuts in the chassis just brackets welded to it for the new subframe to mount.
What you guys think.

I reckon that the only way you will know if i's completely legit is to take it up wit the IVA boys anyway.
Or ask your local MOT guy?

the mot man can only test whats presented for test , he should not decide if its right for the build period or not , just if its safe or not .
try the iva station first .

First of all I 'm assuming that the car kit car has never been finished and registered as a kit car.
If so the it will be up to the IVA tester to decide if the car has been constructed to the required standard. The IVA Tester will not be expressing an opinion as to whether you have used the "correct" donor parts only whether the vehicle as presented on the day meets the requirement. That is the one of purposes of the test to deal with one offs. Ok they might see a number of very similar cars from a particular manufacturer but they will also see a number of unique vehicles.
Short answer, what you are proposing should be up to the job, it will be down to whether the tester on the day believe it is too and has been put together in an adequate manner.

Hi,
1986? That was before the kit manufacturers had the SVA to worry about.
Digging into my memory banks, so could be wrong, I think that the chassis manufacturers now provide seat-belt location certificates with every chassis. I'm not sure if every chassis is tested, or just samples.
I understood the test to involve standing the chassis vertically, and dropping a heavy weight, on straps, attached to the brackets. I don't know how a kit-builder would overcome this requirement. There are a lot more obstacles to overcome (like the spare wheel, if spoked, must be shielded. And no finger trapping holes in the steering wheel).
Thinking outside the box, you could export the pile if bits to a country where they do not have MOTs, finish the rebuild, and bring it back as a PERSONAL IMPORT. ... SVA exempt. But lets discount that idea.
There are members of the Hillman Imp Club, who own Davrians (GRP monocoque), who cannot register them because there is no chassis number.
I suggest that you get hold of a copy of the SVA Guide, published by one of the kit car magazines ... can't remember which.
Google KIT CAR FURUM UK, and subscribe, ask how other people get round this.
Sorry to sound obstructive, but the sooner you are aware of the problems (assuming there are problems) the sooner you can think about overcoming them. Good luck.

Hi,
Log onto Ebay. Do an ALL CATERGORIES search for ...
kit carsand the law SVA book SIXTH EDITION
That was a "copy and paste", so includes the posters mistakes. I's likely that a search for SVA would produce this ad, and any others. Whatever, its sitting there at £2.99 with no bids, plus £2.99 postage. But you only have till lunch time today (Sunday).

Probably...
I know back in the SVA days I rang them up because I was looking at doing a beach buggy they sent me a booklet with all the requirements needed including the points system
I suspect if you contact IVA you would get the same sort of thing
When my son bought a bike that had been used off-road and not registered and he wanted to use it on the road we were told by SVA to get it MOT'd on the chassis number supply them with the MOT certificate and they would then issue reg docs
Biggest problem was getting a MOT station to use a chassis number rather than number plates

Hi Wolly,
I have the 1986 edition of KIT CAR GUIDE which contains details of most kits available at that time. Most were one page per kit, with photo and specification, price and contact details.
If you tell me the make of your kit, I will copy the blurb about your car and post it here.
Or if you would rather not publish the details, send me a PM, and I will send copy back the same way.
I took a shufti through my SVA Guide, found that seat belt mountings are only checked AND MEASURED FOR LOCATION. But I definitely remember reading an article about how the kit manufacturers tested their belt mounts. The advice seems to be that it is not easy getting SVA on a pre-1998 designed kit.

I'm sure that now it doesn't matter when the kit was produced, if it hasn't been presented for testing and registered prior to the current date that it is now subject to the current IVA test.
I seem to remember that someone in the Scamp Club bought an old kit that had never been completed , and he found that it was impossible for it to pass the current IVA test.

Has it been finished and registered and used on the road? We need that bit of information first
