Well, I finally had my interview with Police Scotland Firearms Licensing and it was very a straightforward and pleasant experience ending with a positive decision. Next week I get my security checked and the licence posted to me so the time has come to spend the cash I've been hoarding for 4 months and purchase a couple of guns.

I'm licensed for a 0.223 bolt action with moderator and shotguns and have got my eye on an inexpensive side by side beavertail 12 bore and a used Tikka .223 black synthetic stock with stainless barrel, bag and sling in as new condition with a moderator and a cracking sight for £1200.

My questions are:

Is that a decent price?
is it a decent rifle for entry level use?
Its with a local dealer who has great reputation so I satisfied it is exactly as sold and I will get the chance to shoot it before buying.

As always any comments and suggestions are gratefully accepted

Couple of guys in our Club use the Tikka and recommend them. Not sure about price though.

I'm in the market for a .223 and I'm currently considering one of these:

A bit pricey Shocked Shocked

The Tikka T3 lite stainless is ~£850 new, moderator £250, sights £450 accessories £50 total £1600. The one I've seen really is as new so £1200 seems reasonable but is what I was planning to spend on rifle and shotgun.

Going to look around a bit more.

Been checking around and I can get either a Howa or CZ new with scope/mod and sling AND a 12 bore for ~£1,000

Is there a website somewhere with reviews and info?

Good news, I've had my security installation approved and now I'm just waiting for my tickets.

Decided on the Tikka T3 based on the universal recommendations, I'll keep the scope coz I like toys and I've done well out the turbine and sold a few bits on ebay so I'll get a shotgun as well.

Looking at reloading as well - I can save as much as 55p per round so the equipment will pay for itself in under 200 rounds.

Fun and games Laughing

Are you going to put a planning application in for a rifle range?

Ed, you are a bad man Laughing

I emailed my neighbours to let them know and I had a nice chat with the nearest one who seems relaxed about the guns. He used to do a lot of clay shooting apparently.

So who wants to bet it takes the full 2 weeks for the tickets to reach me?

Richard, if you choose to go down the reloading route you can work up some very accurate 223 loads, both in full speed, and reduced speed (velocity) subsonic, just watch what powder you use as they dont all suit 223, I always favoured Hodgsons BL755, dont know if this is still available in the uk, was a nice clean burning powder.

Lanner Tactical obviously don't need my £2k - no response to 3 e-mails and 2 phone calls!

FAC arrived this afternoon and within an hour I was busy buying toys and, as expected, I massively overspent on cleaning kit, ammo and accessories.

I did get a free hat and waterproof fleece (in camo, which I don't like really but it's a very nice fleece!)

Fired off a few rounds of each to see how the noise went and the kids barely heard the rifle over the telly and the shotgun was clearly audible but not too bad.

Now to set up my shooting cabin and range in the field!
