For the odd emergency use which is the better option? I know rope can be better if you get stuck in an awkward place & you can get higher rated ropes fairly cheap but alot of people swear by bars so you lower the risk of damage when towing another car.

Where is it possible to buy a rated rope ?
With a rope you need to make sure that the person being towed is capable of being towed and knows what they are doing.
NO slack rope at ANYTIME

Are you talking on or off road?
The tow bars are for on road use only, never use one off road
If you are doing an off-road recovery then you'll be using rope.
@mmgemini - all ropes are rated so you could buy rated ropes anywhere
If you want to know the rating of the rope you are buying look at the label on the drum, assuming you are buying it from somewhere like a chandler.
I've seen and used rope that had a rating label whipped onto the end of it - but that was a fire brigade one

You might want to let the military know that.

Know what? - every military rope I've used or issued had the rating marked on the drum

I would very much like one of these. There's even a holder for one in the chassis of my 4x4.

I actually improved one of those:
Sits back and waits for the a-frame debate.........................

Easy enough to make but is it really practical off road? It would put you right on top of the stuck vehicle for recovery - something 10 metres long might be better...
Anyway I think the OP may have been referring to these:

I've got one of those. It's very good because most numpties don't know what to do with a tow rope, and I'm always scared they will use my rear bumper as a brake pedal.

shouldn't be difficult to fabricate one of those.

I made one with two eye bolts that just fitted over a ball hitch -25mm. And they had 16mm threads by about 70mm long. I used heavy gauge hydraulic seamless tube with 14mm inside diameter and about 20mm outside.
Threaded the tube, screwed the eye bolts in and then welded them.
I've never managed to bend it yet.

I'd rather tow on a rope a careful party I trust and who knows what to do, than a muppet on a bar
