It's reminder that our hobby is dangerous.

Similar to Andrew Guinan who died in a freak accident exactly 3 years ago. My thoughts are with their families.

Very sad indeed.

I was thinking about this the other day whilst in my 110. I managed to bash my temple off the seatbelt top anchor (those of you familiar with defenders will surely understand this!). It made me think that despite having a roll cage on your motor, in the event of a roll a defender (or any other motor I suppose, but especially a defender) is not a pleasant place to be. I can imagine some serious injury against the seatbelt anchor / door frame.

Roll cages are one thing, helmets are another.........

We had this very conversation at the last MSA Cross Country Committee meeting.

SWCC made a decision a few years ago (5 iirc) to introduce helmets as a requirement for The Scotia (then still Tay Forest Challenge) much to the consternation of most competitors. We did this even though it is not a speed event and we were worried about intrusion into the cab as a car rolled onto tree roots, whipping from branches but also for winch-monkeys slipping and falling onto stones, rocks or getting pebbledashed as cars sun wheels.

What we did not expect is the number of near misses and that 2 or 3 people reckoned that they were saved by the helmets whist they were completely stopped!

Even now though we have people refusing to wear them, complaining about the cost (we've made changes to our regs to reduce that), not wearing them properly or borrowed, bashed or ill fitting ones that are worse than useless.

I wear mine 99% of the time in the buggy these days!

I have listened to the crash helmet/ roll cage debate for a number of years now. A crash helmet is undoubtedly going to save you bashing your head in, in the event of an accident. Unfortunately during a roll over of considerable distance or from a height, where momentum takes over, it will only add to the strain on the cervical area.
A helmet is approximately 1.5kg, which makes your head 1.5kg heavier, this in turn increases the force to the neck area.
Unless helmets are going to be worn with neck braces/ upper body support it could do more harm than good.
Unfortunately I was with Andrew when he died and a helmet would not have saved his life.
My partner will be wearing a helmet and neck brace when competing at the swcc.

It is a sad fact, one that any sensible person involved in motorsport must accept, that motorsport is dangerous and many of the accidents we hear of are only avoidable by not participating.

There is no fault involved, only tragedy and even now, every time I think about our event I think of Andrew and I remember his enthusiasm for winch challenges. The last time I saw him was the Scotia Extreme, covered in muck but with the biggest grin possible. Everything I hear about Gareth tells me that another great ambassador for our sport has been lost.

I hope it is some solace that he was doing what he loved and that some accidents are unavoidable and unpredictable but I'm sure it is still far too raw.
