Hi does anyone know the max towing weight of a Colorado 3.0td? I'm thinking of getting one for the odd bit of green landing and towing my 70 about.
Thanks ash

I don't have the hand book to hand(its in Bolton and i'm in Cumbria) but mine towed a lwb terrano on a trailer no probs at all at a guess a terrano must weigh in at around 2 tonnes and a 70 about the same if not a bit less. Collys are brilliant but you can legaly tow 3500kg with a fourtrak f75 or f78

2800kgs according to this website.
NB. just because you know someone who has done it does not mean it is either safe or legal. I'll go for safe [almost] every day

On a side note. I recall seeing that the tow weights on vehicles is nothing to do with how heavy or powerful the vehicle doing the towing is, it's to do with it's ability to pull off on a certain gradient with a load behind it.
For the 90's and 'tracks which can tow 3.5 tonne, all down to having a very low 1st gear. A 90 only weighs in at about 1.8 tonnes IIRC, and the track less?
Would I feel safer towing 3.5 tonnes behind a Colorado on disk brakes and IFS than a 90 on drum brakes and live axles? Yes.
Would it be legal? No.
If I fitted a tow bar to my 150bhp mk2 mx5, the tow limit on that is zero.
On a mk1 113bhp mx5? 750kg.
Weird and wonderful world of tow limits.

Hi, thanks for the info I will have to see how heavy my lj70 is (plus all my off road gear) might end up being a bit heavy for a colorado, I was toying with the idea of an 80 series but it's just a lot more motor than I need....

Try this guide from the Government website.

Remember you need to include the weight of the trailer as well.
As DX says, I'd rather be safe than legal but we need to be both! I've towed a competition 90 on a plant trailer without brakes (I didn't know that they didn't work!) with a 90 - two of the worst journeys I've ever made .... Redline Mike, I'm STILL traumatised!!

Thanks again for the info. I drive a recovery lorry and often pull in full loaded artics and with that much weight unbraked it's not nice! I want to keep legal so if a Colorado has got the weight then I will have to look at maybe an 80 then.
Ash

Colorado 90 swb weight 2510kg max towing 2800kg
Colorado 95 lwb weight 2680kg max towing 2800kg
This info is taken from the Toyota hand book as supplied with the car. I did say 2800kg (not 3 tonne smart ****) from memory I had the 95 model so I was only 120kg over any way not 320kg so get your facts right before slagging people off!
