Interesting article about the motor manufacturers keeping the service information about their cars from the independent garages, and the USA rejecting the secrecy in favour of the independants.
http://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2...-your-car/283791/
As cars get more complicated the individual will be able to do less and less, and the independant garages charge a lot less than main dealers so that's where most people will take their cars. Unless the manufacturers get their own way. We need to follow the USA's example and not let that happen.

Can't happen here under the EU Motor Vehicle Block Exemption Regulations. In fact, from 2018, ALL manufacturers must use exactly the same ECU interface making it easier and cheaper for the independants

That's good, for once the EU has done something useful!

The EU has a decent track record on preventing and dealing with industry cartel type behaviour. I am still waiting for the same for big pharma.

Same here, plus gas, electricity, diesel/petrol and what about some competition for water suppliers?

Have you got a reference for that? under current regulations the manufacturers are forced to encrypt or otherwise protect the ECU from unauthorised tampering. Its different in the US where the manufacturers are obliged to allow independents to be able to reflash through the J2534 'pass through' standard. The diagnostic interface is already open to all through EOBD via CANBus but EOBD doesn't support many of the parameters required for full diagnostics hence the need for a second 'proprietary' interface.

Just google EU Motor Vehicle Block Exemption Regulations and you'll get lots of references including Government guidance

I think the EU enforced the same rule when the government bailed out rbs et al, they made us sell off all the profitable bits so the company wasn't too big, the buyer was Santander
