Yep...another thread Rolling Eyes - admins, not sure if my threads can be merged, but please feel free!

I need to do something with the upper control arm ball joints on my '96 Indy.

Looking at £88+VAT to replace each side, but that is for the whole control arm as the ball joint is part of it.

However, I have seen a manual (http://www.bmhor.org/fourtrak/manual.htm which won't load on my work PC, will get a screen shot at home later) showing an Indy (torsion bars) with removeable upper ball joints, similar to this video on Youtube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPEUe_dAmLQ

or better seen here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZeAtcxCGQM

I'm a tad confused. Are the upper arms interchangeable between models so that I can replace my current all-in-one unit with a removeable balljoint unit? Can anyone shed some light on the differences?

Once again, any help greatly appreciated!

Martin, aka Confused from Sussex.

Edit:
Now thinking that the earlier Indy's had the removeable uppwer ball-joint arm - perhaps upto '93? Does anyone have one to compare?

All ball joints in all wishbones are replaceable. They are either pressed (socket and vice) or bolted in.

I've yet to see one that can't be replaced.

true, but no one does an aftermarket version for this type of arm - was hoping that the odler style arm would fit so that it would make replacing ball joint a doddle.

Just found the link to the manual I found online - run down to page 12 and it shows torsion bars with removeable ball joint upper arms...perhaps only on the "rocky" version of the 'trak...?

It's been a long time since I did mine, I sold the truck 6 years ago. But I seem to remember the upper ball joint was riveted to the wishbone arm, you ground the heads off and then knocked the shank out of the holes. The new ball joint came with nuts and bolts.
But I could be wrong.......although I am sure that I changed an upper ball joint and I did it at home with no more than the usual hand tools.

thanks plugga.

Going by the link I posted with the images, the bodyshelf manual pages seem to be for a sportrak rather than a fourtrak. Confused
