Hi, looking at bits and pieces for the next project
As the spider is nearly done
Any thoughts on a cvt drive and gearbox that can
Take 100-200 hp in a Polaris type vehicle

No not what I was thinking
Cvt is two cone shaped pullies where the gap in each gets wider or smaller
Depending on revs.... Like on a snowmobile
I was looking at the micro car cvt, but wondered if it would handle the hp

Do you mean variomatic drive? Like daf cars used?
I think it's a very good system smooth as no gear changes as such. I think early fiesta autos used it so you could use a fiesta engine and box mounted inline and used the diff as a transferbox? Would work well on something light with suzuki axles..

Hence the combine option
It's the only thing I know big enough, but it's not speed changed.
Are you that against auto? Just a massive range of choice in this technology? And it does the job.

I don't understand your love of the combine.... Is that what happens when you have owned a Landrover for a number of years... Only joking
If you think of a Polaris type rig... I don't think anything combine or agricultural would fit in
I am thinking along the lines of fireblade engine minus gearbox and clutch, so from the crank output into a cvt box with the diff welded up, one shaft into an sj or jimny transfer box then to diffs

I'm not sure it would cope with the torque needed for off roading but there ahve been a few cars with CVT gearboxes:
Nissan Micra
Volvo 340
early fiesta auto
All small, lowish power/torque.

I did the polaris course when E L Cooper was a dealer, and it is flipping brilliant Loved driving them.
If you can afford the R&D time I would try the polaris CVT on a bike engine. Worst it may do is have shortened belt lives?
Except I wouldn't, I'd just go find a big polaris and mod that. Less power, but so much stuff already in place like the electric front hubs.

I believe merc a and b class cars are cvt.
I recon there'll be a lot of electronics on em though.
Rover 25 & 45 had cvt as well.
Not very reliable my house mates died at 36k from new.
Went well though. When you floored it it'd hold engine at peek power
An move the gearing up.
Would be interesting to see in a buggy.

Talked to our gearbox rebuilder awhile ago about CVT boxes, he said there not reliable enough for serious off-roading, though we were talking about heavier 4wd's than you are looking at (1200kg, 35" tyre...).
There are a few different ones out there, I'd look for something bigger and stronger than you think you'd need.

CVT's in the side by side (UTV, RZR, etc) industry and in the snow mobile industry will handle ridiculously high loads when set up properly.
Check out companies like STM and Team Industries and spend some time on Youtube looking at 200-300 WHP RZR's in the dunes and snow mobiles set up for asphalt and grass drags making upto 600 HP.
Additionally, Gates makes carbon fiber and Kevlar impregnated belts for high load and high HP applications.
