My wife's Cherokee developed a wobble at speeds. A couple of times it has got very scary. I have replaced the wheel bearings and drive shaft UJs on the front axle for the MOT and hoped this would help (they were shot anyway). Well it passed the MOT, but the wobble remains. Any ideas what I should try next?
PS
I rotated the wheels to try rule out an imbalance in the front wheels.

Wheel balance is most likely.

with it being a specific speed then looks like wheel balance
but get under and check for movement in joints - but if MOT was done right these should have been checked

Had this problem myself, was down to uneven wear on one of my tyres, went through all the suspension components like yourself to no avail but as soon as the tyres were changed it was fine, went and got the tracking aligned straight away so they dont wear uneven again

Prop shaft bearings or joints?
Shocks? (but MOT should have picked that up)

Thanks for the suggestions.
MOT guy tells me they don't even test the shocks anymore, but they do fail based on a split in a ball joint rubber that could potentially allow water in! Sounds like they have their priorities wrong there!
I will try borrow a complete set of wheels and try that.

Only on the outer - reason being that you could get a stone in that would jam a CVJ on a lock - you don't want that believe me

True I wouldn't want that, but I was referring to the ball joint on a steering arm (track rod). Whilst I'm not disputing that letting water and grit in would lead to an early failure of the joint and that it should be fixed, I'm just surprised they no longer test dampers which if faulty can double your stopping distance as you skip to a halt.
I have always wondered with the XJ using open spicer joints if anybody has ever had a stone jam one up.

Death wobble is common on lifted Jeeps so if it has recently been lifted it could be due to adverse prop angles. A slip yoke eliminator can sort this. Other than that you could try the steering stabiliser.

I agree that wheel balance or tyre wear (or a bad tyre) is most likely cause. The steering stabiliser doesn't cause wobble, and won't do anything except mask the problem.

Thanks for the advice guys.
I swapped all 4 wheels with a mates Jeep. The wobble went away. However, he didn't experience any wobble either with my tyres on. I was really hoping his jeep would wobble as a confirmation. His jeep is a Grand Cherokee with coils all round, so a different setup to my leafs at the back.
His tyres are a smaller rolling diameter than mine. My Jeep also has a 2" lift. However it has had a 2" lift for about 8 years and only developed the problem 6 months ago. The tyres/wheel combo it is on were put on 2 years ago although they were second hand. They also don’t have balancing weights but I’m told balancing beads which you can hear inside when you roll the tyres. But they worked for 18 months. They aren’t massive either 235/75 16
Anyway, I have ordered 4 new tyres from etyres (only £216 for four brand new AT tyres fitted in my drive) so we will see.

Hi.
Just for an update. Got my super cheap Nexen roadian AT2 tyres fitted. Nice tyre as far as AT tyres go and at 50 odd quid each fitted a bargain.
Anyway.
Wobble reduced but still present. Decided to check the tracking using a tape measure to measure the distance between the wheels in front of the axel and then behind. Had a 20mm greater gap at the rear indicating tow in. I figured this was probably fine but a quick google revealed that with the transfer box I have there should be no tow in. This goes against my gut feelings but adjusted accordingly. To be honest I left a 2mm bigger gap at rear.
Wobble now virtually gone. This surprises me, I wouldn't have expected that. There is just a sense it might be there at exactly 58mph. I bet if somebody else drove it they wouldn't notice.
So, bad tyres, bad balance, tracking - who knows but the combination appears to have worked FOR NOW.

Just an update in case anybody else suffers the same issue.
The Jeep still wobble free. So tracking and tyres I guess.
Still impressed with uber cheap Nexen AT11
