|
|
|
The vehicle is a 1996 Defender 90 300 TDi County Station Wagon. I am now tackling a number of the smaller jobs on my vehicle following a new chassis etc - this simple one is driving me mad!
The drivers side door had no lower door seal fitted (runs along the bottom of the door inner face) so I bought one from a reputable 4x4 specialist in my area - they advised that the purchased item was correct.
This is fitted but despite adjusting the door catch many times I am unable to "tune out" the fact that the door no longer closes properly - this is especially obvious in the bottom rearmost corner of the door which sticks out to my great annoyance.
The passenger door seal (which is what I should have looked at first) is of a completely different design to what I bought. The purchased one is basically a flat rubber strip with a tubular section molded to it - the passenger seal is just like a flat non-tubular surface.
Can anyone throw any light on what I need to order - as far as I know the doors are original to the vehicle.
Thanks

judging by the number of times you have posted this ,you have a problem not only with your door seal but your pc as well .
was the door gap ok before the new seal ?
if it was then they have given you the wrong seal , i`m not saying the part number isn`t correct but the part may be miss labeled

Thanks for the reply - I have emailed the moderators about the numerous times my post has appeared. I am guilty of writing the message and pressing the Submit button once but I'm sure all will be corrected tomorrow.
Yes the door did fit correctly prior to the seal being fitted but the supplier who is a Land Rover specialist is adamant that there is only one seal for this vehicle which is what he supplied. Clearly there must be an alternative because the passenger door version is different and everything fits well on this side.

I'll try and do some pictures as suggested but someone I know has advised that 200 TDi's had different lower door seals compared with the new one I've been supplied with. Might be useful if someone on Difflock has knowledge of both versions or indeed owns both versions.

A few years ago I had a brand ned 110 Defender at work, and the drivers door was an appalling fit that let the rain and draughts through. Our transport department told me to take it to the dealers for a warranty repair.
So I did. A mechanic took the 110 and drove it around the back to the workshop while I sat in the waiting area of the showroom. I went outside for a smoke and wandered down the line of used Landrovers at the side of the building, just in time to see the mechanic, out in the yard behind the workshop, with his boot against the bottom of the door and both hands on the top bending the door into shape and then slamming it shut. Repeated as necessary until it didn't need slamming.
Then he went in the workshop, presumably to drink tea, and I waited another 45 minutes before I 'had a word' with the service manager. It wasn't my 110, but that wasn't the point. The quality of the 110 was crap and their service was even worse.
Not that my little tale will help you fix your door, other than letting you know it was probably built like that.

Given that Defenders are essentially the same design as 40 years ago, that kind of adjustment was standard practice in the 70's so not a problem in my eyes.
Mind you, seen someone do that without opening the window first

After a bus ran into the back of my Disco the insurance company arranged for a local body repair "specialist" to repair the back door. When they had finished it there was a 2 centimtre gap all along the top of the door. I didn't think much of that firms work so I took it to my friendly local independant Land Rover garage and with a huge amount of brute force and ignorance and a liberal application of the size 11 boots they fixed it.

Looks like I may have the answer - I contacted Rimmers today who were very obliging and took the time to go to their warehouse to physically look at the type of seal I had originally fitted (supplied by another 4x4 company). This was an inverted "P" shaped seal which does not allow the door to close properly.
The type which has a flat contact face as fitted to the passenger side was located and the photo on their site is good enough to see the profile - so I'll order. The Part No. is ALR6250.
Thanks for all the inputs.

Defenders have door seals
To be honest I've "adjusted" lots of vehicle doors with a knee here and a push or pull there, at a guess a landy door is at more risk of getting twisted than any other vehicle made in the last 20years
