i am going to rebuild my standard carb. i have a 92 1.3 spanish sammy. I would replace with an SU or a nikki, but i have abouut 20-30 quid left to spend and i don't think i would find for that.
Has anyone rebuild a standard carb, how easy was it to do and how can i improve it.
Piccys would be great or a write up even better. ANy help wopuld be most greatful.

Have a look in the 'Carburettor' section - some info on std Aisin carb in there...
Basically, assembly is the reversal of removal!!!
As you remove parts, label them, lay them on a clean work area and take your time.
If you have a digi camera, take plenty of pics to remind yourself how things were before you removed them.
Not too difficult really
Nigel.

nope doesn't help, as it doesn;t tell you how to strip it down - i am guessing the hanyes manual will have it, but is it worth trusting that???

Sorry, can't help then.
I don't have a manual and simply remove something, noting the process and when there's nothing else to remove I reverse the process and rebuild !!!
Someone else may have a link or better suggestion...
Nigel.

Emm
Call me, I have done this on mine and now know it backwards.
Would swap mine for an SU in a heartbeat but just haven't had the time to look into it.
My standard one was fine after rebuild.

Emm, I striped mine down today and took some pics -
Mines a manual choke one and there are at least four different Aisin carb types so yours may look a bit different but the principals are the same.
I don't want to go into all the vacuum pipes and what not (I disconnected them all a long time ago!), this is just a hint as to how to strip it down....
This is also not a full strip down, just enough to get to the important bits and to give them a clean. Every bit you see or remove give it a good squirt with CarbMedic and clean it.
First disconnect choke, accelerator, fuel line and fuel solenoid wire -
Undo the four bolts holding carb to manifold (could be from the top depending on model)-
Take a note of how the gaskets and channeled spacer plate sit, leave them on the manifold-
Remove carb (practice throwing at neighbor's dog)-
Undo bolt holding acceleration pump arm and slide arm out of the pumps plunger (left hand side in photo) -
Remove fuel solenoid -
Undo 2 screws holding the hot idle gubbins, disconnect the vacuum pipes and remove -
Bottom HIC vacuum pipe sits on the very bottom of the carb-
Remove fuel inlet banjo -
To remove the (manual) choke stuff do this -

Note this -
And off it comes -
Remove this pin from accelerator gubbins to choke gubbins to release the arm -
And undo the 5 screws -
Top part (air horn) now comes off -
Remove spring from accelerator pump -
A quick map -
Remove primary and secondary speed jets and check gaskets -
Undo the two bolts to gain access to the main jets -

Remove main jets (primary and secondary)-
Give everything a good clean. Check for damaged gaskets and rubbers on the acceleration pump.
Re build and go VROOM VROOM!!!
I had a lump of something keeping the secondary speed butterfly partially open which was causing me big problems (similar to yours) but now it runs sweet!
Hope this helps!

emm, no probs.
My LWB project is 4 months into the build, was supposed to be 4 weeks...
Haven't gotten muddy this year (other than in the garden)
Simon,
Top write up as usual.
See, there's always someone on Difflock who comes to the rescue.
Nigel.

Well Simon I'm impressed:- I would have said bin it. I have seen more talented people than myself mechanically attempt a strip Aisin carb and fail to get it running any better.

Cheers all and I hope this helps you sought out your problem Andy.
The manual choke Aisin is an excellent carb - heck, the auto choke is an excellent carb as well, and when they run they run extremely well it's just that they are over complicated so when something goes wrong it's a ****** to track it down.
Over here we swap to a manual choke (much better for crawling any way) and do away with all the vacuum stuff (it's all mainly for cold starts etc.) because it's not needed.
Leaves you with a relatively simple, reliable and cheap carb.
As a side note, I have a feeling that the Subaru DL series of carbs will fit zooks. These carbs are bomb proof and a doodle to set up, maintain and fix.
When I get the time I'll have a play with a few and see if they need an adapter plate or not.
Simon 'cheap as chips' Owen.

Simon, thanks for the write up! Identifies a lot for those unfamiliar with the Aisin!
Can anyone advise on adjusting the fuel / air mixture with the carb mounted? On mine there is what I gather to be a spring cover, but under there I can see no screwdriver slot to turn or adjust it with, only a flat face. Is there a trick to this?

If you do go the SU route and if I remember correctly there is a book by Davis Vizard (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Tuning-British-Leylands-Series-Engine/dp/0854297324/ref=ntt_at_ep_dpt_6) which details tuning them up. Nice cheap tricks too.
