I'm after a new torch for keeping in the cubby box of my landy. I'm a fan of maglights; I actually quite like their weight and have had one for years, but wondering if there's anything out there that stands-out as a shining-beacon of all things torchy.......
suggestions welcome..

Depends what you want from the torch.
I have a Maglight. I also had one of those overpriced "Police" torches.
The Maglight is about somewhere. The expensive one has been binned.
Now I'm using those couple of quid LED torches from wherever, cheap, good light for working in an emergency, not bad for walking about. Not expensive if you break it or it gets stolen __________________________________ mike FOAK
Get yerself down to "The Range"
they are doing some little lites in their camping dept. uses three aaa batteries and seven leds, perfect for the cubbyhole and cheap as chips.
i love hte comparison at the end too.. __________________________________ I live by 2 sayings:

Lenser are IMO a load of overpriced overrated krap.I expect anything of that type of price to last forever, not eighteen months.
Don't expect to leave one in a cubby box and it work when you need it __________________________________ mike FOAK
I have a small led torch that plugs into the cig lighter of the car so it's always charged. It's bright enough to not fall over stuff, unlock things etc. got it from lrs off-road for a fiver I think.
I have a plug in mains led torch available plain from Cromwell or branded from Halfords. You can leave it plugged in all the time, it sits in a cradle with no physical electrical contact and if there is a power cut or it's dark and it senses movement it comes on. It has a torch and a flat light.
I also have a Kennedy flat light from Cromwell that has various bendy bits, magnets and hooks that allow it to attach to stuff and it can be charged from mains or the car. __________________________________ I know enough to be dangerous.

I'd also recommend Candlepower. That does come with warning though, since finding that site I've become a bit of a collector!
I own one LED Lenser, and won't own anymore, so echo mmgemini's thoughts there.
If you want something you can throw in the cubby and forget about, I'd suggest the most important thing is that it will work when you need it - to me this means Lithium cells and circuitry which has little parasitic drain.
I've a couple of Nitecore 'smart piston drive' torches which are lovely, but continually draw some current - they would be useless for you - but one useful feature they have is a low output mode which won't ruin night vision. Could be handy depending on your use.
Happy to share (via PM) the URLs of UK based retailers I'd recommend, most of whom have good product comparison info. __________________________________ 'Believe nothing no matter where you read it or who has said it, even if I have said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense.' - Buddha
I have a plethora of lights a powerful biggun i keep charged from the cigarette lighter and a couple of lidl/aldi cheapies with the magic ingredient spare batteries.

I still have my maglite which fell out of my jeep when I rolled it at speed 18 years ago... But I hardly ever use it
A Cree LED head light is the way forward.
I like my dewalt torch which has a bendy neck to wrap around stuff of get the light beam in the right place but that's only good if you have a car full of power tools!
I've also been using my iphone as a torch for the last few years, I alway used to have a baby mag lite on my key ring but that's long gone __________________________________ Land Rovers are the root of all evil!
Now i have gone and bought a D4!
one day i might buy a 86" series one like my dad had when i was a boy.
Oops!
I may have added to the collection.

Weird, We've 3 LED Lenser torches in the household, all over 4 years old, and all in constant use in the winter. The one in my Vit leads an unpleasant life, and has never been a problem? What's so bad about them for them to be so unpopular? __________________________________ Steve

Mine no longer works. The light is on all the time. Not something to throw into the cubby box and leave.
For the price I expect better.
Now the one I bought for £1.50 many years ago from ULTRALEDS works fine in that situation.
I suppose you pays your money and take a chance.
ME I don't take chances. __________________________________ mike FOAK
My LED Lenser still works, but I've bought far better performing torches at the same or a lower price point since.
I still have it, but the main (occasional) user is my 10 yr old son. Other torches I own perform better so I use them. He has the one that I consider most toy like - it's as simple as that. __________________________________ 'Believe nothing no matter where you read it or who has said it, even if I have said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense.' - Buddha

I use a Snap On one I bought from a store in Westhil about a year and a half ago, DD should know where it is. It has a small amount of LED's at the end and a lot at one side for bigger jobs, and a strong magnet on other end too, wasn't expensive and because It runs led's, doesn't use batteries that much either. I use it for work and play, and still have the original batteries in it. __________________________________ Another BORDC'er
