Hi all

As the title, to be honest! My 110 has a leak from the power steering box. Is it worth dismantling and replacing the seals, or just replace the unit?

My concern is that if I dismantle and replace the seals etc., it'll still leak, due to worn parts, and I'll be back to the same issue pretty quickly.

If any of you have done this / have any advice, I'd be grateful to hear it.

Many thanks in advance.

Might be easier, although more expensive, to fit an exchange, reconditioned box.

Don't bother changing the seals. You won't stop the leak.

As it's cold now the seals harden. Try some Wynns Steering Box Stop leak. That will tide you over until you get a new box.

I've not done one on mine, because I had bearing movement. And it was a tad more than a drive-way drip.

If I were to invent a rule, it would be that high speed stuff with race bearings re-seals, and low speed stuff with plain bearings doesn't. Although there is probably a million exceptions to that Smile
I suppose low speed stuff tends to have less side flex at the lip seal?

Somebody on LR4x4 was trying a speedy seal sleeve on a pitted shaft. Not sure how they went on?

The shafts tend to wear so often a new seal won't work, seal kits are cheap if you feel like having a go. Mine got a bad leak a few months ago so I stuck wynns in and picked up a couple of spares. Hasn't leaked yet so I haven't bothered changing it.

If it's a road car I'd get a recon unit rather than second hand.

Thanks all, that's what I figured too.

Thanks for the pointer for the sealant, I'll give that a shot first.

All the best

i have to agree , ive found its usually the bearings that wear out and the shaft . that causes the seals to leak .by the time you have spent trying to get the drop arm off you can have a new box fitted . job done in under two hours . ive used lucas power steering stop leak before and had good results with it .
it says for rack and pinion steering but it still work great . just remember to stand the bottle in hot water for a while to soften up before you try to pour it in .

Fitted the bottom shaft seals, from a £6 britpart kit, to a disco box. One year/10000 miles later its still bone dry.

They do work Smile

I ended up replacing mine with a refurb unit from http://www.4x4gearboxes.co.uk/ that was 3 years ago and still OK .
