Mike's post on the Concorde and Ian's comment got me looking for a EE Lightning taking off at dusk - one of the most amazing I've witnessed...

Anyway I found this site:

Click the Lightning to see the page...

When I was a kid I spent a very enjoyable summer at RAF Wattisham, home to the Lightning QRA, where my Uncle was based.

A memory that will always stay with me was lying on the grass at the end of the runway with the camp kids as the lightnings took off over the top of us!

Wattisham - I was trying to remember that name - it was there one evening when I watched that lightning take off...

It was halfway down the runway (wheels off the ground of course) when it changed course to straight up with after burners on - what a sight - wished I could have photographed it

Not sure when it was I visited but they were flying Phantoms, probably F4Js, at the time I remember visiting the QRA hangers and noticing the chewed down fingernails of the pilots Shocked

Ahhhh.... the cold war...

Nice pics - all superb aircraft but the best for me is the Buccaneer although I may be a little bias as I used to drive one.

Remember, many years ago Laughing transiting up the channel and they were doing low level attack practice across the channel and a bucaneer was flying towards us at the same level as the ship's bridge, we all dropped to the deck as it popped up and over the top of us. Ship was a 36 000 ton loaded liquid sulphur carrier.

Try landing one on the deck of an aircraft carrier and you will really know how big they are!

Hi,

Can anybody post the picture of a Lightening going the other way ... straight down? It's on the Web somewhere.

Next questions, can you identify the pilot who has just ejected horizontally?

And the make and model of the tractor, and name of it's driver, that appear in the same photo?

I understand that the pilot survived. I'm amazed that his parachute had time to open. Was this the lowest eject ever?
