|
|
|
My Alldays no longer needs an MOT but does not (and probably never had) lights fitted but I'm considering joining a local heritage rally that ends in Glasgow on December at 7pm. Thing is it gets dark/dusk here from about 3.30pm.
I have bicycle lights clipped on the back (and can have on the front when I buy new ones) and reflectors but is that enough to cover me legally for driving in darkness? Note: I will only be driving on lit roads (apart from the 3 miles back to my house) and only of the weather is suitable.
Thoughts?

I don't see why decent bike lights wouldn't cover you. Most modern bike LEDs are brighter than the lights on my 110!

Man waving a red light walking in front of you...
You may find that you need lights as per regulations if you fit a light(s) but not if you don't fit them?
But there again in the middle of nowhere who is to see?

Most candles are brighter than the lights on a 110 lol
I would get some lights witht the external battery pack , rechargeable and ultra bright., and the light is a little smaller too.

Hi,
I suspect that IF you have lamps fitted, then they MUST comply with the regulations. Fit one lamp, fit them all. But hey, what do I know?
Google OBLIGATORY LAMPS, which should give you SI 1989.1796 SHEDULE 1. And take a hard copy, then study at leisure.
SI 1796 seems to say that if you have a rear registration plate, it must be illuminated, unless it is a works truck. All other lamps are exempted dur to your vehicle's age.
Mike WW was stopped by the police on the M4, in snow. They said that THEY had seen his semaphore indicator, but suspected that the Porsche driver hadn't.

In my view, you could light the Alldays up like a Christmas Tree and have a man in front with a red flag. But if you had an accident with another vehicle then I would think you would have been irresponsible to drive it after dark.
I’m sorry it’s not want you want to hear, but from my view where I see the results of misadventure, then I end up thinking of my actions, “If it all went wrong through no fault of myself, what would people think of the situation I have found myself!”
Example: If I drive like a nutter, overtaking everything even on corners, then I drive normally and skid on some mud on the road and end up in a hedge….. The vehicles that I’d overtaken would think it was all my fault - even without knowing the full facts.
Contrast that with “I drive normally and skid on some mud on the road and end up in a hedge….. The vehicles that come along behind me would think it was all the farmers’ fault - even without knowing the full facts.
Example: I drive my Alldays after dark on a windy rainy night, a car doesn’t realise that I’m traveling so slowly, and crashes into the back of me. People traveling past look at the mess in the road, and think….. “What the hell was he thinking, in driving that at this time of day”.
Contrast that with “I drive my Alldays on a bright sunny day, a car doesn’t realise that I’m traveling so slowly, and crashes into the back of me. People traveling past look at the mess in the road, and think………

I hope you'd know me by now that I'd prefer an honest opinion and I appreciate everything you've said and I think, in general, you're right.
Clearly this is not a situation where I'm going for a regular drive at night, nor one where I've just got caught out by poor weather/circumstances and have little or no other option but to drive with bicycle lights, I am planning to drive through Glasgow in a car that has no 'official' lighting.
Where this would differ is that I am participating in an organised and sanctioned heritage rally that will not finish until mid evening. I could drive there (in dusk) and arrange for a willing helper to bring the trailer in to collect the car (a serious option) or will the addition of 4 bright LED bike lights be enough for the short journey to make me more than visible enough?
This all presupposes that the rally organisers are okay with it, the weather is looking good enough (definitely not raining, misty etc and not to windy or cold either thanks) and the car goes well enough to get there!
I fully take on board your comments - it may be legal but that does not necessarily make it sensible!

After all of that, I've just read the regs for the run and the car is not really eligible so I'd just be driving for the fun of it to join them at the end.
Same question applies I suppose

I'd put LED flashing beacons on it as well as little lights. Compared to a modern car it is 'mobile plant'. If you get into trouble, no one can say they didn't see it.............

Partaking in a heritage rally and you have a 110 at your disposal.
Don't be lazy, get a trailer and tow it to and from the event.
Either that, or light it up like a Christmas tree.

Agree with DD and you get to show off both of your vehicles at the same time.

The heritage rally involves driving, it's not show off and tell!
On a number of levels I think I'm asking for trouble, traffic, weather, road conditions never mind light levels.
Someone did suggest last night that I get a cyclist to ride in front of me but I'm worried he'll go too fast for me!!!

That's be plenty slow enought and really, nothing's going to rear-end you.

Hey, the brakes fail in that thing and just keep down-shifting The engine braking in 8th is still pretty impressive.
