Although this is related loosely to my zook, i think it more appropriate to post it here.

vehicle registered new on 20 oct 2001, (is a 51 plate), 1.9 TD, and has a cat..

what are the regulations in place with regards to cat removal, specifically emissions and MOT for a 2001 diesel?

it should be noted the vehicles taxation class is Light goods vehicle (commercial)

i `m not sure on vehicle specific , but rule of thumb is if it was built with one it needs one .
you can ,if you can get one fit a thru pipe . so long as it looks like its not been chopped out and piped up .
does any one do a decat pipe for it .

that said it depends on the tester , how forgiving is he , some are a jobs worth and others are a bit more easy going .
as for the emissions ,i don`t think it would make much difference .

well i have seen (and looked into) various options

one is complete removal (via a link pipe)

one is basically smashing out the core from the inside by poking something in the end (not something i want to do)

one is cutting the thing open and removing the restrictive core, then rewelding it together so in effect the case is still there, and the internals (and restriction) is not..

not something i am going to do in the near future anyhow.

if you cut out the guts , you get a popping sounds coming from it , sounds horrible .
if you can make it look original , you should be ok

Why do you want to remove the cat?

I fell for this myth and nonsense with a number of vehicles and I can tell you that if you just remove the cat there will be no improvement in performance or fuel economy. All you will be doing is giving yourself a bit of aggro and expense to buy a new bit of exhaust and risk an MOT failure.

No vehicle needs a cat. It needs to pass a vehicle specific emissions test.

Your millage may vary.

can i suggest you go re read the mot book , the up to date one .

SECTION 7: Exhaust, Fuel and Emissions
• A catalytic converter missing where one was fitted as standard. (Vehicles subject to a full cat test only.)
Exhaust tailpipe positioned so that fumes are likely to enter the driver’s or passenger area.
• A fuel pipe or hose excessively chafed or damaged.

this is an interesting article/.

TLDR version: DERvs are NOT subject to a full gas test so you can pretty much do what you want..

interesting article..

dervs have a smoke test not emission test..the cat on a derv does nothing to reduce smoke...however the rules changed recently and if it came with a cat then it has to have one fitted for the test.
removing the guts of the cat kills 2 birds?reduces back pressure and as far as the tester is concerned he sees a cat fitted?
no cat on its own will not do a lot but as part of a package of mods it is worth the effort.
if you poke the innards out save the debris....worth about 30 quid at the scrapyard.

i did some reading some more, (testers manual) as suggested in that little article, says basically that the cat has to be there IF a full test (ie petrol) is conducted..

dervs have no requirement for it to be there even if it was fitted, is my understanding of it.

I stand corrected. Was this a recent update?

I'm not an MOT tester, but when I asked one, he said diesels do not need to be fitted with a cat. 3 years without on mine.

So long as they pass the smoke test they're fine.

but as has been said above, I'd leave it if it's not causing a problem. If you're having a custom exhaust made, leave it out. Your derv would be fine without a silencer, just a pipe frome front to back, but they do drone a bit. A small silencer or resonator calms it down a bit. Small turbo=relatively quiet.
