Just got my Defender back from having some major surgery work done by a small garage out in the backwoods of N.Devon which has taken about a month or so - very pleased so far. This leaves me with a few niggly things to sort out - one of which is the spare wheel carrier.

When I bought the vehicle it came fitted with alloy wheels and 265 x 75 x 16 tyres - the spare on the rear door is the correct size but is of a different manufacturer to the fitted road tyres. With this spare tyre the casing touches the rear wiper arm and also prevents me from opening the rear door because it masks the handle.

So other than fitting a swing arm type carrier is it possible to purchase a modified carrier where the three locating rods which the spare wheel sits on are of a longer length? This would cure my problem and keep the Chief Fairy happy because I've spent thousands so far.

You used to be able to get spacers from a LR dealer that gave you some extra clearance for the wiper, if they are not still available why not wind on three steel wheel nuts or even fit some SPAM washers onto the studs to give you the clearance you are after. Mantec do a alloy wheel spacer kit (which are basically 3 flat washers) but at nearly 18 quid there must be a cheaper way of doing it.

I used 3 wheel nuts reversed on mine as a spacer. Actually, when I had the swing away on the 90 it came with 3 nuts as adjusters.

Thanks for the replies - appreciated. Well it appears that I already have what is suggested, that is, the three rods have reversed wheel nuts and threaded washers to provide linear adjustment. Even when these are set to allow the maximum distance the wheel is positioned from the wiper arm and door handle, it still isn't enough to achieve the clearance needed.

I haven't removed the rear door inner trim yet to see how the three rods are attached to the mounting plate, but I can see that I may have to consider having some longer rods made. I was hoping that something like this may have been available off the shelf.

Why not take some of the adjustment out by moving the wheel nuts and threaded washers up the threaded bars, surely then the wheel will move away from the wiper arm.I wonder with the problem you are suffering is the reason why LR only factory fit 235/85R16's to the 90 and 110.They did factory fit 265/75's to 90's for a year or so a long while ago (mid 90's) but gave up on the idea. Are they factory fit alloys or an after market fitment as the offset of the factory alloys (33mm) didn't give a problem if i remember rightly, as the 90 with the 265/75's on came with either 5 alloys or 4 alloys and a Discovery steel wheel as a spare.

Sorry for a long winded post.

No need to apologise Mr Tyre for your reply - concise info is always appreciated. I have moved the washers and nuts down the threaded bars to a point where I cannot move them any further without risking a less than reasonable amount of thread engagement with the wheel securing nuts.

The Defender is a 1996 Station Wagon and to be honest I don't know enough about Defenders yet to state what wheels it came out of the factory with but I've decided to do my own modification.

I'm going to remove the carrier and cut the three rods roughly halfway along - I will then weld a two inch extension to each rod (like a sandwich) and then place a tubular section over the welded portion and weld around the tube edges - then paint and fit. Should work I think.

Remeber there is a lot of weight in a supended wheel and tyre and choose your material accordingly.
