|
|
|
I know there are some MOT testers around here, so I thought I would ask a question.
My van has failed it's MOT on emissions, I think that the tester didn't let the vehicle warm up properly. The test was at 09:00, and I dropped it off shortly before, a distance from home of about 1/4 mile. (On a very cold Monday morning, when the vehicle hadn't been used over the weekend).
Now I want to take the vehicle somewhere else. Does the reason for the failed MOT show up on the new Test station screens? Does the fact the MOT had failed show up at all?
I intend to take it elsewhere and have the engine hot when it arrives.....

What were the test results - was it diesel or petrol
Might be better to take it back to the same garage - you shouldn't have to pay unless you chose a cheapie MOT place....
Who'll possibly fail it again or pass it on payment of retest fee
Anyway test results would help a lot
If you are taking it to a guaranteed test certificate place, I wouldn't think they'd worry about what showed on the screen...

As far as I can remember, the fast idle speed test was 0.97% CO, for the first run, then 0.25% CO for the second run, everything else was OK. The target was 0.20%CO.
I think that giving the van a good blast up and down the road, together with a clean out with something like Redex Petrol Treatment then I might get the results down to an acceptable level.
Also it failed on rusty brake pipes, and rather than replace them I was going to coat them with a liberal handful of grease.

seriously?
Having said that I wire brushed brake line that were failed for being corroded but after cleaning them they were fine ... for the next 9 months when they failed, interestingly not where they were corroded!

I wouldn't do that - I've taken off failed brake pipes - they are usually seriously dangerous - actually more than often they brake up getting them off

i agree , they usually break when you try to get them off , and the never fail in the place you expect them to .
above all else , why would you want to save a couple of quid on ,of all things brake pipes .

Yeah but, I've known this tester for nearly 20 years, and he has a thing about rusty brake pipes, everyone gets a caution about rusty brake pipes, he gave a caution about them for nearly 10 years on my Disco, and I didn't change them or clean them.
So forgive me if I sound a bit complacent about that.

As for the engine, mexican tune up will solve that reading, and then take it back for a retest.

I don't like brake pipes, did a long drive home once, parked the car on the drive, wife was out first thing in the morning so went back out to swap the cars, reversed onto the road fine, went to pull back onto the drive and nothing. Brake pipe had failed and gone from normal brakes to nothing instantly. Imagine if that had happened on the motorway
Had my car MOT'd this week, advisories for phone holder in the screen, child seats fitted in the rear seats and tyre wear down to 4mm. Hmmm

yeah, dave (from bits4vits) had a fail because of a dash mounted phone holder, as iirc it restricted view from the windscreen , and if i remember correctly there has to be nothing restricting view in the area they would normally fail a chipped windscreen in.
(please dont quote me on this)

Any danglies from the rear view mirror, anything within the sweep area of the driver's wiper and probably more as well

Had a issue with leaking mild steel fuel pipe that removed wax oil from mild steel corroded brake pipes . When it fails think of the worse case scenario . For the price of £50 to pay someone to replace ?

My mate's father's Vitara failed on a pitted brake pipe, we replaced it in my garage and took it back for the retest and they didn't even do more than glance at it. Pipe was checked by us and was even worse in areas that it had not been failed on. We now plan to replace the remainder of the piping system because of the condition of the pipe we replaced.

I agree that sometimes , you have to be you own inspector ,what's good for someone is knackered to someone else , had a another issue steering with 90 landrover you could turn the steering and the wheels wouldn't move , one of workmates mechanic said was ok , I wasn't happy towing 1.5 ton trailer with it so I took it to another mechanic he took it off the road ? If you get a leak you only got a small amount of fluid to play with. No good if your plowing in the back of another vehicle

I believe it can't be bigger than 30mm in size in the area swept by the wipers and 10mm in size directly infront of the drivers view but I could be wrong!

Well, I've spent the day fitting new brake lines and bleeding the brakes. A real ****** job on your own.
I'll take it back for a re-test next week and we'll see what's up...
