I can't get the damn thing started now. Advice would be appreciated.

Going back a couple of days ago I had two incidents where the key was only operating the drivers door and not the rest of the doors. (the fob doesn't work, shock horror)

I got in and upon turning the key it doesn't start. I get "engine disabled" on the dash as well as "alarm fault".

I got out; locked all the doors, opened the bonnet, disconnected and reconnected the battery. put the key in the door again. All the doors unlocked with the turn of the key. A good sign I thought. Got in and it started.

HOWEVER The same thing happened again and the usual trick didn't work. I have had to leave it at work for now.

I had the same with mine, ended up having to repeatedly enable the engine with the emergency access code.

Problem was solved by buying a replacement key

Disconnecting the battery will make the situation worse not better on the P38.
You will now need to in put the emergency code via the door lock with your key then enter the car and attempt to start it. That should re sync the fob codes with the imobiliser system.

Good luck

Had a similar problem with the fob on my Disco.
Would lock first time, every time, but was very reluctant to unlock.
Upon taking the fob apart I saw that there was a sticky resin covering the unlock/lock buttons.
One can of pcb cleaner from Maplins sorted the problem.
If you do use pcb cleaner, do not be tempted to wipe or dab it dry, you might damage the contacts on the pcb, just allow it to evaporate.

If you do decide to get a replacement fob, you could do a lot worse than buy one from Remotekey.co.uk (plus you'll get the EKA code sent to you when you return their programmer...)
