Hi. So I have come up with a wizard wheeze to save aggravation and possibly money too. Has anyone recently hired a 4x4 and if so how much and was it a positive experience? my idea being to run something like a vitara 11 months of the year and then hire a heavy tow car for when the sales are on around September times.  Saves the uncertainty of an older defender and the associated costs.  Any thoughts?

would certianly be cheaper,

might want to look into a commercial hire place (vans and such) if its for a more, commercial use.

failing that, places like enterprise and hertz etc all do 4x4s (luxury ones, as well as more... agricultural types) but you would be better off getting something like a warrior or hilux from a commercial place, if you get it with the crewcab you still get a tonne of loadspace and towing ability up to 2tonnes (in most cases).

they may even do a defender or 2 as well, giving you the scope to tow up to 3.5 tonnes with appropriate licenses etc

Having a defender already it would need to be another that was hired. Will have a look at those companies and see what they have to offer.

Shb hire defenders and pickups but I've no idea of cost. Got to be hundreds a week.

Oh I kinda thought it would be but even if it is it's still going to be cheaper than owning one when I only really get full use of it for a month a year. Will get some quotes and see what happens.

I see your thinking but not where all your extra costs of running something you already own compared to owning something else.
If you maintain what you own properly and where are the huge costs and aggravation coming from?

What does it cost to sell what you have and buy something cheaper or the same value?

Only approx costs, and on the high side.
Defender, £190 VED, £250 Insurance, 10,000 miles at 30 mpg £2160
MOT £300. Bits and pieces £200.
£3100

Vitara once bought. £190 VED, £250 Insurance, 10,000 miles at 35 mpg
£1860, MOT £300, Bits and pieces £200, Hire of a 4x4 when required £600.
£3400

Once the Defender has had money spent and is running properly, what is the big expenses that it is costing you,
or do you really just not want a Land Rover.

Maybe buy a Hyundai, Kia, Toyota, Nissan, Mitsibiushi or the likes with a proper towing capacity and drive it all year.

There's only me that can or will drive the defender which is not ideal, also with the exception of towing it is a bit much car for most of what it has to do and to be fair it's had too many cam belts fail in too short a period for me to trust it not to need a new engine in the near future plus at nearly 16 it's getting a bit old for trouble free work even the little bit it does, there are times when it simply cannot break down not that new ones are exempt from going pop but it is a good bit less likely, there is after all a reason most farmers have fairly new ones. As to a one car fits all that car for us doesn't exist but equally I am a farmer not a car collector and can't justify 12 different cars with one purpose each that get a use 5 odd times a year so selling the defender and replacing one of the others with something a little bigger and then hiring a specific type for a specific job makes sense.

You have it all worked out then,
so all you need to find out the cost of hiring a 4x4 when you want one,
that is a phone call away.
and being a Farmer that will be cheaper to you probably, it is a business expense and you will be able to put against tax.

Then find a buyer for your Defender,
& then find and buy the car that does all jobs without requiring you to have 12 cars.

Sounds easy peasy.

ignore Scrunt mate, he is from tayside and upset at the rest of the world cause he is inferior.

i might think about getting something like a small diesel GV, (the 2.0) and using that as a run around.. at least then with a half decent set of ATs you get the added bonus of if you do need to get up a field or over a little rougher bit of ground you can just throw it in 4wd and off you go..

then like you said, hire a landy for the times when you do need to tow something more hefty around.

I think you'll find that the reason has little to do with reliability more to do with tax (as in loss) Laughing


Most of the farmers around here are driving L200s or Navaras rather than Defenders

The government have stopped capital gains tax from being offset against the purchase of new equipment so I would expect to see a lot of businesses invest much less in new equipment. We used to have a couple of new machines every year where I work, now there's nothing as there is no incentive to do it so you might as well keep the old ones plugging away.

What answers did you want.?
You covered it with your question in the OP.
People gave good replies, and you think mine was sarcastic,
probably it was, as written, or more importantly as read, but actually meant as tonque in cheek
because you asked for 'thoughts'.
(re-reading it now, i have no idea why you are taking offence at what i wrote in the replies.
Starting name calling is a bit much, and that is a kind of reason that Difflock is dying maybe.)

The answer was based on all the other stuff that went before on the forum & replying on Defenders, Pick ups, Suzuki Jimny's and what you use them for.
I hardly think it was trolling to give 2 replies which just agreed with what you want to do, or try to look at the costs, but hey ho.
Seldom if ever do you come back and say 'thank you for taking the time to reply'. Another reason that Difflock dies or slows down with age, a lack of manners from posters and hence people just ignore questions.

So, Brilliant idea. genius infact.

Which of course has a knock on effect of increasing down time for maintenance and reduced production. Old equipment is ok so long as it is working.

I've reviewed this discussion and although as George himself admits he has been a bit sarcastic his points are valid (but I would questions his calculations).

It seems to me that you simply don't like what he has to say which, I am afraid, is part and parcel of discussion.

Note: We have banned people in the past for consistently name calling, racism, and generally being massively divisive and Scrunt's posts do not ever even come close to that. I suggest time is taken to read posts carefully and try not to take offence when someone agrees with you but in a sarky way.

Calculations as in my postwere not fixed costs,
but posted as an example of doing a costing.
People need to do their own working out.
Man maths, sometimes nothing to do with reality,
you work the figures to suit what outcome you want.

No idea really of anyone elses Insurance costs, VED, fuel usage, annual miles, maintenance costs. etc.

Only the person using the vehicles can have that knowledge, or choose to share it when asking others or thoughts on some plan on their transport needs.

All I asked was for someone with recent experience of hiring a 4x4 to offer a recommendation of who they used and how they found the experience that's all. I didn't ask to be told how to cost the idea nor did I ask if it were the best idea for my circumstances.

Hiring a 4x4 is very easy in the UK, but can be more difficult at times of high demand like Winter hitting area not prepared and Emergency Services requiring the vehicles.
Autumn, Harvest, Market, Bull Market time might be high demand time in country areas, maybe not in City areas.

All sorts are available at all prices, SUV's from Airports or City Centre sites,
them more Countryside, tow barge type vehicles,
Plant Hire & Commercial use business's Hiring.

Location dependent, and then just the correct Licence and ability to get the
Insurance.
Flash the card, collect the vehicle you have chosen, or found available.

Get to know your Local Hire Centre, use them and hiring in the future or short notice becomes easier possibly.
2 Day hire but collect in the Evening, return Early in the morning, you might have it for 4 nights.
Much like hiring trailers, transporters etc.

Believe it or not we have had more failures and down time on newer machines. The old control systems were bespoke with single layer pcbs, off the shelf hydraulic parts and reproducible mechanical parts. The new machines have machine spec pcs with windows based control systems with touchscreen which has proved temperamental. The pcbs are all double layer with a lot of custom programmed chips so essentially unrepairable. We can also custom edit the software on the older machines so you can change it as the application changes. The newer machines lock you out of the software so any change you may want to make during the life of the machine has to be specified at time of order.

But enough of that seeing as its nothing to do with your question Smile
