Have a question for a friend,
He has bought a car from a trader that passed its mot yesterday, he collected it and likes it. However when he was cleaning it today he noticed that there is a hole at the bottom of the a pillar and its fairly rusty and deformed underneath. Surely this should be an mot fail? Or at the very least an advisory.
He is naturally a bit angry about it but wants to go in armed with information to the dealer.
Looking at the testers manual it states a within 30 cm of a body mount but what is considered a body mount?
Thanks

There are a few testers on the forum. Pretty sure if you post a picture you'll get a good reply.
A picture speaks a thousand words.....

Ok the picture above should be showing the general area of the the rust on the pillar the two below the close ups one with a tape measure for scale.
The other ones are an attempt at the underside of the car it's a bit different to get under than a 4x4. I can see a couple of small holes but I couldn't get my pinky in them and one felt like it should be there.
The rust on the bottom of the door pillar appears to be on what I would call a skin it's pretty thin metal.
What do you guys think? I think it's not as bad as he made out but then I am used to discoverys.
Thanks

I would think the garage has a " Tame tester " & if the outer plastic cover sill was removed more horrors would be found.

There is no body mount on a Jag, the rust being on the A pillar is possibly acceptable because the A pillar does not have a seat belt point on it. The only reason for a failure would be if it were within 30cm of the seat mounts or there was a danger of the floor breaking away...

MOT testers are not allowed to remove plastic covers (or anything else for that matter) if they could there would be a lot more failed Fourtraks and Vitaras

He has calmed down a bit now! We are going to take the sill covers off next week to see what's going on under them and take it from there. Had to explain how the tester can't take things off though and was only a safety and emissions thing.
Thanks for the info.

I just sold my P38 and bought an X-type !!
I should have done more research .... they seem to have a problem with the sills
Hope I have caught it in time, wire brushed, Kure Rusted, two coats of Hammerite gloss and one of Waxoil underseal.
The sills on the X-type are marked as the jacking points so need to be solid

If its got an MOT dont panic, it can't be revoked.
Just spend a few hundred quid on welding or DIY and put it down to experience.
