I flew to Munich this evening, flight time was short - with a tail wind at some point of nearly 140 mph! It set a new record on my old Garmin - 1061 km/hr = 660 mph ground speed (Airbus A319).

Can anyone beat that Cool

Mine tripped when left it on for a flight. Got an average speed of 780 kph though.

1061 km/hr is ground speed, not air speed. It'd be impossible to fly that fast in an A319 Very Happy

My all-time favorite is the Lockheed FR-71 Blackbird...Imagine flying over the USSR at Mach 3.5, taking pictures and being absolutely untouchable

On a technical point, the Garmin does not take into account altitude so 1061 km/hr is not ground speed nor is it the true air speed. I could show you the maths to prove it but an appointment with my distillery makes it all a bit hazy. However, my Disco 1 will do faster than that, so there!

PS: Oh no, sorry I thought that was 1061 km per week!!!

I had a blazing row with a male trolly dolly on a flight when he told me I had to switch my satnav off as it could cause the plane to crash Rolling Eyes

He could grasp the fact that it wasn't a transmitting device.

You are right, the Garmin isn't a transmitting device but TomTom "Always Connected" satnavs are.

Ah but it is. Do you know what EMC class its qualified to? I'm pretty sure that it won't have been qualified to be used on an aeroplane.

Surely the plane electronics should be suitably screened against EMI?

AFAIK EMC Directive 89/339/EEC covers aircraft and aeronautical electronics so any CE and FCC marked satnav should be fine.

No - I hadn't.

I just think it (she's called Jill actually) threw a hissy fit.

They do have to be 'suitably screened' whether or not its adequately screened against a mobile phone or transmitting GPS is another matter, if the emissions from the device are less than the level at which it was qualified then it won't be a problem.

That isn't the case at all, a device can be CE approved but still interfere with other equipment, my wife gets quite irritated if I leave my phone next to our old TV. EMI levels do take into account commonly used frequencies but if the avionics was qualified some time ago then the limits in force at the time may not have taken into account the frequencies or power of a modern device. That's one of the reasons why airlines are reluctant for people to use devices because the testing hasn't been done.

not quite as fast but the satnav from my lorry claims a top speed of 120mph, for a 40 tonne vehicle limited to 56 I think it's just as impressive and even more unlikely Laughing

You're a little behind the news. AA have just aloud gadgets switched on during take off. It's been BS for years.

Since the last few months, BA allows gadgets and phones to be used as soon as the plane has landed.

But the number of times I've forgotten to switch of my phones is countless and there must be many who make the same mistake.

Earlier this year, after landing at Heathrow on a direct flight from Shanghai, I discovered I'd picked up a Vodafone text message saying "Welcome to RUSSIA....". I thought that was funny!
