Been looking for a small 4x4 for the last couple months but nothing has been around unless I travel a stupid amount of miles which I didn't want to do. popped to my brothers for the afternoon yesterday and this little beauty was parked up for sale, bargain after haggling the price down to £450 with 10 months MOT and 4 months TAX, only 2 advisory's on the mot which were front brake hoses slightly perished which is minor as a lift kit will mean new hoses anyways.
so far today I've done a full service, oil, oil filter, air filter, power steering fluid change, coolant change, spark plugs, rotor arm, dizzy cap, new fuel filter.
ignition leads wont be in until Monday so they'll be done then along with the diff oil change and also gearbox oil change Monday. new door handle should be here then aswell for the rear door.
seeing as how it's a new toy I wanted to get right on with doing work so stripped the front bumper off and got cracking on the winch bumper that'll also be part of the engine and sump guard.
didn't have more than an hour or so on the bumper today because of getting the service stuff out the way but will post pics up through the next couple weeks of mods with bumpers, sliders and suspension etc.
just out of interest how much suspension or body lift is needed for 31's?

| should have said it's was owned by the previous owner for nearly 12 years and I have every mot from new and all receipts for tyres and work carried out etc, there is 100% no rust in the bodywork or the chassis and has never seen a welder until today which surprised me.

| How much of its life has it spent in Cornwall, if we haven't got rain/fog/drizzle combination we"ve got howling gales coating everything in salt spray or at every chance they get Cormac gritter"s doing their best to chip our bodywork!! No rust, that"s a good find.

the last 12 years have been in cornwall, bodmin to be precise, it's been doing around 4K miles a year since she had the vitara and they didn't really want to sell, due to baby on the way was her only reason for selling.
I've had a bloody good root around and cant see any rot anywhere, there's the odd patch of surface rust on the chassis but it's been wax oiled every year at a cost of nearly £200 with a receipt for every year it was done for the last 12 years.

| In answer to your lift question, 3" suspension and 2" body lift will pretty much clear 31's. Might still need a tiny bit of adjustment with a universal persuader. Do you really need 31's though? I run 235/75 15's on my Vitara, and I've done some pretty serious 'lanes in it with no clearence problems, and no need for a body lift.

it has 255/60/15's on at the moment, I was looking at some that were 265/70/15's and also 31's and the price difference is only a few quid so was thinking might as well go for 31's haha

do it the other way round tho..
2 inch sus, 3 inch body lift, much more reliable way to lift and easier too

do it the other way round tho..
2 inch sus, 3 inch body lift, much more reliable way to lift and easier too |
managed to find a set of nearly new 265/70/15's kingpin technic amazon's on reversible rims for £150
going to get the 2" suspension kit for now and do the body lift in the new year.
I have 2 winches on order and have nearly finished the front winch bumper, just gotta do some trolling to find some ideas for rear winch bumpers on vitara's.
also have a 253amp alternator and dual battery charger kit to fit in the next 2 weeks.

here you go, this is the link to the guys that I got mine from. 215amp for £155. I know that the one I have cost me just shy of £200 but it had maximum output at 1200rpm!!

| forgot to say that if you don't want the fuss of making adapters to mount the alternator you can send yours to them and they'll upgrade the insides to maximum output. I know the standard hilux ones were 65amp and they could go to 150amp output which is still a big jump in power.

progress has been slow due to having my toe nails removed from my 2 big toes, finally been able to get some workshop time in though, and managed to get the bulk of my bumper finished today, just the A frame and fog light holes to cut out then off to the powder coaters.

And thats with just 1 " poly spacer and 205/16 tyres

I've actually got a 3 inch body lift fitted, the front of the bumper looks big at the moment because of the panels, but I've got some fog lights on order that'll be sunk into the panels to help protect them front being smashed, it'll look so much better once the A frame is made up and spot lights fitted.
hopefully I can get some time to start the rear winch bumper this weekend, my idea is to make up a swing arm for the spare wheel and farm jack to fit to. will have to see how it pans out, I've a pretty cool idea for the rear lights aswell.

Nice work on the bumper, but to me it looks too low/large and will just dig in when approaching hills etc?

I was worried about that at first but it only sticks out 1.5 inches more than the standard bumper, plus once the suspension kit is fitted I'll add the skid plate underneath. I'm not gonna know for sure until it's finished and gets taken out for the first time. If it needs to be modified it does, that's the fun of off-roading, at first you fail then you learn and improve.

ok, so managed to get a couple hours outside again today which will be it on this bumper now for a few days as waiting on the lights to turn up so I can make up the moulded clusters. it's going to have bit of a bug eyed look to the front bumper but I think with the design I have it'll look either really sick or totally crap. time will tell. I've a set of 9 inch spotlights on order for the top of the A-bar.

I've been trying to find places that supple beadlocks, as I've seen these and really like them but didn't know if there was anywhere else out there that does similar or can do designs?

Out of interest have you thought about how much weight you're adding to the jeep, I know most spring upgrades tend to sag a lot once a winch is installed....!
Still have to move all that weight around and puts more load on the drive system!

I have, it works out that if I had both the winches @ 13,000lbs plus the battery's and the bumpers plus the side steps and sump guard, I'll be adding 300kilos roughly to the weight. The springs I've ordered have been made to allow 350 kilos of extra weight on the vitara so I'm hoping it'll be ok

jimnybits is where they were ordered from, took nearly a month to get them once ordered. just need to get them fitted when my toes allow me to scramble underneath and do it.

The bead locks may look cool but have you thought how do you get your wheels on/off as i bet it will block access to atleast one wheel stud
