hello guys
l need some info on a water pump and there was someone on here who helped me before but l cant remember who it was
we have stripped my crash tender to make into an offroader and in doing so l removed the water pump and cannon, would make one hell of a water feature in the garden so waste not want not l am going to try and make it into a fountain
but what l dont know is if the pump will suck water out of the pond or if it needs to be fed with water which is a bit more tricky but still doable
so pics below anyone know if this will suck water in once primed ??
in the crash tender it had 1000 gallons of water sitting in a tank above it which dropped in with gravity l would like to throw a suction hose in the pond and draw water in and see how high l can get the fountain with different nozzels, as you do

I don't think a centrifugal pump can suck... not sure
Submerge it and lengthen the shaft?

It'll need to be primed then it'll work fine. The little plate on the top is the blank for fitting primer.
You're talking gallons per second with that beast!

Seconded with priming it. Non return may help when it's switch off.

thank you chaps
for priming can l just fill it with water before l start the engine ? or do l need a vacuum pump, l would guess filling it with water would work as thats how the small honda ones work ??
l think it might be around 33 gallons a second, as it has a 1000 gallon tank which lasted 30 seconds
the spec of the crash tender called for at least 150 feet jet
since it was a 4" nozzel and l am thinking around 2" might be better then l would expect more than 150 feet ?? next door should be impressed not lol
shame to cut the old girl up but she will live again

Put a non-return valve on the inlet and outlet pipes of the pump. If the pump discharge pipe is higher than the pump fit a 1" pipe with valve from discharge pipe to inlet pipe and you can use the water in the discharge pipe as priming water if the pump goes dry.

well not combined but kept in the same stable
l one zil has been dug out so l can finish fitting the perkins V8 and autobox
cab has been removed and just a space frame is going on, currently modifying leyland daf wheels to accept the 500x520x508 tyres

I've had alsorts of games with second hand pumps people want to use on sites
Lots will handle non flooded sucking lots don't
I have found keeping the suction line bigger than the pump inlet helps
What are you going to drive it with?

On a centrifugal pump you can control the flow by throttling in on the discharge valve without damaging the pump.

l have a 150 cummins engine out of a 7.5 ton lorry , over kill perhaps but its free, l guess l need to fit a strainer to the end of the inlet pipe other wise the fish will get altitude sickness
still waiting on weldable elbows so as l can couple pump to cannon

With the huge amount of "suck" that pump will have you may need a very large strainer surface so that the fish can swim away against the suction. Perhaps an under water mesh fence in a corner of the pond with the suction hose behind the fence.
The alternative is to supply the local fish and chip shop with fish who could claim that their fish are freshly delivered by air!

Garden pond...lol...
A number of years ago (mid 90's IIRC) I was stationed on a certain Fighter Base somewhere in the UK
The Bomb Site there had 3 Emergency Water Storage Tanks (EWS) within the fenced area, piped to a remote take off point outside of the fence. These tanks, quite strangly happenend to have carp in them. Baby carp, not so baby carps and fully grown carp that were looking for a new home.
Now, the Fire Section (with Carmichael Fire Engines) were tasked to clean out the EWS tanks across the airfield every now and again. These particular tanks however for some unknown reason used to get missed.
One, fine sunny week the Fire Section get a temp replacement crew in, who being helpfull lads went round the site doing the EWS tanks over their weekend shift...
It transcribed that Tank No2, at 200,000 ltrs did not take long to empty, apparently they had it sorted in something like 3/4 hour from the remote take off point
The fishes did not slow the pump down....
