Hey guys,
New to the scene, and forum. Recently bought my first 4x4 through work.
It came in as a Non-runner, with 4 flat tyres, looking a little sorry for it's self.
We had 2 sportraks and 1 (now my) Feroza in the yard. The 2 Sportys are EFI, and both have blown engines. The Feroza is on a carb, and after a bit of messing around, I got it running.
It turned out the water activated choke was all clogged up. When I went to pull the pipe off the carb, it snapped the nipple off the body of the carb, so it's currently locked fully open, with no choke.
Next step is to try to make up a cable activator for it. So any advice will be greatly appreciated there.
Now it was fitted with some 5 (maybe 7) spoke, steel wheels (6.5j IIRC), which were not holding any air. So I Looted the alloys from one of the sportys (8j), and fitted my 235/75 Recip Mud tyres to them.
It's been an on-going project since I got it. I'd like to do a suspension lift. Even though I am sure it sits higher than a sporty as standard. I still need a little extra clearance. Towbar gets stuck in the ground on steep hill climbs.
I've done some research. It turns out I can make up some longer shackles for the rear, although I've removed a shackle from one of the Sportys for a template, and it appears they are going to be one helluva barsteward to get out!
Front, I have read is on a torsion. I've not looked into it yet, but is it really as simple as adjusting a couple of nuts?
I'm from the french Hatchback car scene you see, and adjusting torsion bars can be an absolute swine on the rear of a Clio/R5.
Anyway, heres a few pics...
Wheels off:
Tyres fitted to the alloys
First day out, was driving in 2wd, and nearly tipped it...
O/H Had to climb out, and stand on the rear bumper, so I could get out, and engage the front hubs, then it was a gentle drive backwards to get it back on 4 wheels...
Lessons from this, is to always try and green lane with another truck. AND, I'm now after a winch.
Rear cylinders were seized, rather than snapping off brake pipes, and struggling to source replacement parts for an import, I just rebuilt them
All muddy again;
I'm located in Kent (Medway area). We have some cracking lanes, but I've been riding them all for the past 4 years on my MX bikes, so they're a little boring now.
I'd like to do a few days out with some people from other areas. Drive new spots etc.
I've just applied for my Medway council permit for the closed off areas like Holly Hill. (Never needed permits back when I had my bikes).
I'm sure I'll have lots of questions ahead of me. And being a technician myself, I'm sure I can give out a bit of advice here and there too.
Cheers,
Ben

Welcome indeed and I have always likedthose, good cars...
...you'll find lots of like minded 4x4 folk on here as well, and I know there are some in your area too.
See you around in here.

2" suspension lift - Check!
Spent 3 hours doing it this afternoon. Really wasnt too hard. Making the shackles up took the longest as it was 6mm iron bar I had to cut and drill through. The holes were 17mm, so took some bloody drilling!
Only thing that concerns me, is to get the shackles back onto the leaf springs, I was expecting to have to jack the rear end up, to line up with the bolt holes.
But instead, I had to get a big lever bar in, and pull down, bending the leaf springs 'straight', even before the wheels are on the ground. (And yes, I jacked up on the chassis, not the diff).
Front was super easy to adjust. Just jacked up on chassis, and tightened up the adjuster bolts on the torsion bars. I went for 12 turns (Not sure why), and it was spot on. winner.
Only lifted the front about an inch, as it was already jacked up higher than the rear to start with.
Verrrry tempted to attempt a body lift now, so I can go a tad bigger on tyres. Oh this is addictive!

Welcome and keep up the good work, us Defender owners need to recover the odd Jap car to reinforce our illusion of superiority

Good old Sportrak's, mine's been an ongoing project too (when I have the time). Word of warning on the front torsion, don't crank them up so much as to preload the bar, otherwise you'll just end up with a solid front end and no suspension movement at all.

It drives really well with the current suspension setup at the moment, Clearance is as much as I can get without going for bigger tyres. I've done the 2" susp and tucked the towbar right in.
The main clearance issues I have now, are the two big box-section bumper replacement I've got bolted to the back of the truck.
And the rear shackles.
So it can only mean one thing. Body lift and bigger tyres.
Gonna start off with a 2" body lift, then once my tyres are worn out, the truck will be ready to go to something bigger. Maybe 31s or something.
Dont want to go too big as the gearing will be too tall. Unless there is a solution for that on the Feroza?
Quick bit of advice on the lift kit.
I'm not spending nearly £100 on a kit, when I have access to a lathe and infinate amounts of ally bar.
I need to know what size the original body to chassis bolts are, so I can order some longer ones through work.
But dont want to go trying to remove one, having it snap off on me, then being left with a truck I cant really use.
Does anyone know the standard size of the body bolts? (Length and diameter), so I can get some +2 ones ordered.
I'm not up for risking it with some M10 threaded bar.

£100 for a 2" Feroza body lift? you're obviously looking in the wrong places...
BTW you'll find the bolts have to be fine thread, which the last time I looked were retailing for £6.50 a piece on line

Binge, I have the 2" kit from Xpajun and it was well under £100! For me it was easier to buy the kit (factoring in the cost of the bolts etc).
Unfortunately there isn't a solution for the gearing when you fit larger wheels (I have 31's on mine). You could tune the 1.6 for a bit more power, or do an engine/gearbox swap, but the latter option isn't for the faint hearted! lol

The 2" lift kit is still around 70£. Once postage is involved, there isn't that much change out of £100.
I work for a recycling company, Metal, glass, plastic, wood etc etc. We take 100s of tons of metal in every day, much of which is ally round bar. So the spacers wont cost me anything really, just a bit of time on the spinner.
Why do the bolts need to be fine thread? Do they thread into captive chassis nuts or something?
If it's just a simple nut and bolt setup, why can a nyloc nut not be used, with a bit of Loctite for good measure. Providing they are 10.9 high tensile, they'll work?
Just wasn't sure if they were M10, m12 etc, and what length I'd need.
I can get 10 bolts at any length around the 200mm mark, for about £12, which are 12.9 grade.
I understand an off-the-shelf kit would be 'easiest'. But when I can do it all for under a score, the extra cash can go towards my winch.

If you look under the chassis, the bolts go into v.large washers that have the nut built (welded?) onto them. No reason you couldn't use some v.large washers and nylocs though.
However the two at the back, thread into a nut that is hidden in the chassis I recall, so you cannot replace it.
I did my lift ages ago, so my memory is a bit foggy on the specifics. lol

Ah okay, will have to take a good look at it.
Hopefully the captive nuts at the back dont decide to spin off inside the chassis.
