i must admit, i do remove some layers of protection in the summer (hot enough to not want full leathers on)

either way the staple and absolute minimum is gloves, boots, solid jeans (at least) and lid..

No other clothes?

The mind boggles? Second thoughts, clear my mind of the idea of 20 stone half naked bikers.............

On my way down to the tailender I met up with a mate in Sheffield. As he was pushing knee pads down his jeans he was asking why I had a back protector on.

He spent the weekend looking for one.

Jeans, t-shirts, shorts, trainers, skin grafts, a&e.

What, for a couple of hundred quid all in? Less if you look around Lodi and aldi.

Keep the air moving past and you'll never get too hot Smile

There's passage in Ted Simon's book "Jupiter's Travels" (the tale of his 4 year round the world trip on a Triumph Tiger begun in 1973) where mentions in passing that he fell on a mountain road in India and rolled down the road.

As he put it, despite the heat he was wearing leathers (its a while since I read it) and if he hadn't he would have had his skin peeled. It hurt but he carried on.

As an aside, anyone thinking of travelling across continent should read his book((s) - google them) as it is almost a template of how to travel and how he learned to cross countries and borders...its as if all the more recent guides based their knowledge on his experiences.

There is always alot of discussion on the bike forums about people riding with very little on, mainly kids on scooters but occasionally people who should know better.

The general conclusion and opinion now is let natural selection take place and let the stupid remove themselves from the gene pool.

It might look cool to ride around in shorts, flip flops and various types of swimwear but they won't look cool with no skin.

I think the ratio of wear at 30mph (skin on tarmac) is 1mm per 1 metre.

My bike is already put away for the winter (although I don't ride it in shorts and bikini)

Spend a couple of days in Italy and see what your cringe / minute ratio is.

Having read that book (and seen the prog) I should have remembered that...

...Didn't they meet him?

I follow ATGATT All The Gear, All The Time

After 20 years of riding 16k+ miles per year I had my winter/summer wear sorted; Aerostitch suit over the top, good quality lid and gloves and Altberg boots. The suit had plenty of vents and was very comfortable with ordinary jeans and Tshirt etc underneath. For winter I added layers and a heated fleece.

As the Norwegians say "there is no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothing".

As I see it there is no excuse for not wearing the right, however .... I don't know how many times I've batted up and down the road a few hundred metres to dry the bike off or test something wearing just a lid (and ordinary clothes).

Now as for bikes and bikinis ..... I had a 1200 Bandit with a bikini fairing, does that count?

T shirt, shorts and thongs are what most motorcyclists wear over here Shocked

I had the pleasure of meeting these two adventurers in our little town, they are the original "Long Way Round" bikers Cool http://2ridetheworld.com/

We also had this event in our town recently http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/events/queensland-2013, we are quite famous for motorcyclists coming to Dayboro as they like to do the mountain drive. Unfortunately, every weekend there is a bad crash up there Sad

Please moderators - don't let anyone post pictures of Ian or Richard in a bikini!
