Hi.
I've got 9000lbs winches on two trailers, (one on a flatbed and one on another Ifor Williams).
I'm wiring up using Anderson connectors (350a).
my Q is: could the earth on the car go from the plug to the chassis - using heavy gauge wiring. then run another heavy gauge wire from the chassis to the battery???
I've seen many toipcs where people have said not to - but these have all been cos they have not ran sufficient earths from the battery to the chassis.
your thoughts...

no reason why not. provided there is an unrestricted route from where you bolt the trailer end on, to the battery end
there should be no issues there..

It will work but it's not best practice.
The ideal is to wire back to the battery in all cases to maximise the current flow to the winch. If you're not needing the full capacity of the winch then it will be fine.
I'm about to do the same because I'm getting too lazy to winch up onto my flatbed but I don't trust LR electrics and I've got oodles of welding cable free.
An alternative would be to have a small battery on the trailer which is then charged by the car whilst travelling and allows winching operations when the car is not attached and negates the need for heavy cabling.

A high current anderson plug? I personally wouldn't want a couple of hundred amps going through the (greasy) towball and expect a good connection.
Remember the crazy calculation to work out the cross section of the cable used. For a run from the front of a vehicle to a winch mounted on a trailer you'd be looking at something dwarfing the cable currently fitted on your winch.
