|
|
|
Hi guys
As per the topic has any made window grills?
I'd like to make a set to go over the rear windows on my Hilux Surf.
They'd obviously protect the glass from trees etc when off road but they'll also look mad maxy which is always good
Could also use them for light external storage racks.
cheers
Steve

Do you mean like you get on a snatch landy?
I don't know of anyone making them for something other than the LR badge, or indeed Mad Max..
I'm sure george will know about the legalities regarding this sort of addition, as you might find that it's not as straight forward as you might think, for instance I can't imagine any home made window grilles not having sharp corners...

this kind of thing but mine would be heavier construction
I'm handy with my hands and have all the tools, welding gear etc so construction to avoid things like rough edges wont be a problem.
They are readily available for the land rover etc so cant see any issues with creating my own?
cheers

Well if you use rounded edges then I can't see why (if it's ok for a land rover to have them) you couldn't make your own beefier versions for the surf!
Is there anything good to mount them onto on the Surf, those guards look like they sort of hang/attach from the rain gutter...
Is that a pop rivet on the bottom that goes into the tub edge? I'd want them secured by a bit more than that if they're going to be a more heavy duty construction.

That was exactly my plan, shaped and styled to the window.
I was thinking curve it over the top as the rear windows does on a surf than use stand offs to bolt/screw through into the body.
Any other ideas?
I may simply make up a template then take it to a metal fabricator and have them cut and bend them for me.

My experience of them.
Total PITA when there is snow.
so you need space between the grill and the glass and drainage,
just to not trap water along the bottom, or as ice melts.
Holes big enough to be sure that compacted snow is not caught there for days.
Spacing out from the body will then mean more chance of catching something with them, like the branches that usually will just brush past.
Seal all attachment into the body very well.

What happens if there's someone in the back in a crash?
What about if it rolls over into a river (Strata Florida) with passengers? What good in an emergency hammer when there's a steel grate?

I'd never have someone in the load bay.
That's illegal and dangerous.
