Stupid question - Are the gear ratios at the first four gears (5 speed gearbox) exactly the same as the four gear ratios at a 4 speed Niva gearbox ?

Thanks, info in this regard will be appreciated.

Hello Danie
There seems to be some debate about this in many quarters. Look at Lada Spares UK forum and this list was included
Four speed
1st, 3.75
2nd, 2.30
3rd, 1.49
4th, 1.00
rev, 3.87
Five speed
1st, 3.67
2nd, 2.10
3rd, 1.36
4th, 1.00
5th, 0.82
rev, 3.53
Certainly the I know the 5 speed ratios shown are right, but there are other views about the 4 speed.
Hope this helps.

It depends which market the 4-speed was originally for and due to the age of the 4-speeds many have been changed for saloon units.

Most of the original 4-speeds have the same ratios as the 5-speed.

Thanks.

The reason for my question - I am in contact with a guy who claims to own a "racing" Niva gearbox. Aparantly the gear ratios on this gearbox are very different from the standard 4 and 5 speed Niva gearboxes. According to the owner the 4th gear has definately not the usual 1:1 ratio.

I am very interested, and hope to visit the owner during the upcoming weekend, to have a closer look at the gearbox.

Yep, that's why I have made an appointment for Saturday to have a close look at the gearbox myself.

The gearbox has been removed from the vehicle, and it should be fairly easy to check the ratios, specially the 4th gear ratio.

Myth busted - I undertook a trip of more than 300 km, have had a proper look at the gear ratios - and discovered that the "racing" gearbox is nothing but a standard Niva four speed gearbox . Crying or Very sad

Pity you had to drive 300km to find out.

I hope the said gearbox has now ravaged the anal sphincter of the seller?

Sadly, the real anal sphincter (original seller of the gearbox) is one of the the "official" Niva spare part distributors locally. He likes "blowing his own whistle", and usually acts as if all Niva owners who do have some knowledge about Nivas, are a bunch of idiots.

The current owner of the gearbox is an elderly retired guy who is dead honest. He only bought his Niva recently, and was not interested in a "racing" gearbox right from the start.

All gearboxes have a 1:1 ratio for one gear (4th in manual, 3rd in auto etc). It's just locking the input shaft and output shaft together (straight through).
