With my replacement mountain bike I'm going to get a carries for the Discovery. Now I was wondering which is best, a Thule that attaches to the rear spare or tow ball.

Any thoughts?

How far did you get with your thoughts Damian? I am thinking about a tow bracket mounted one (not tow hitch bit direct onto the Dixon Bate instead oof the adjustable tow ball mount as if I am towing then the bikes go on the rack on trailer) but haven't started looking yet.

just wondering.
how do you open the back door when a tow-ball mount one is fitted?

I have one that sits on the spare.
it carries my bike or my wife's wheel chair equally well.

That's a very good point...

...hadn't got that far along the thought process!

But to be honest if its just wifey and me then we don't need the access into the back quite as much and can just remove the whole shebang on arrival.

The one I have on my hitch plate has a detachable upright so the door won't open with the bikes on but there again the door probably won't open with bikes hanging off the spare anyway (if you can find one to span the tyre Rolling Eyes )

Personally I prefer to carry on the roof...

Thought about those but was already keeping an eye on just how much weight I was putting on the rear door and its supporting bits...

...especially as the the rooftent is now in place.

Probs me just being overly carefull.
