Hi all, trying to get a feel for whether this would be a good investment. Its an ex army ground anchor. As you can see its not the traditional design, lacking the lower arm section most other anchors have. its a simpler affair.
wondering if anyone has ever used one, if its any good?
kind regards,
ned .

Ah ground anchors - a specialist subject of mine ...
No easy answer. First you should ask yourself a few questions:
which vehicle is it for
what kind of terrain
how often will it be used
how many times in a day's play might I need it
is my car a daily drive, ie how will I store/carry it
am I using it for competitions
how much is it
Rather than reproducing the article, I suggest you try giving us a few more details and background and we can guide you further.

imo only buy a ground anchor if you really have a use for one, ie a competition, lots of self recovery winching or lone forestry work...
they're a pain to carry and store as a "just in case" item.
I got rid of mine...
if you want a good proven anchor then look at the x eng unit or a pull pal.

Not too good, I have used a Danforth style boat anchor (12kg). It does work but because of the way the arm is, it tended to go ar*e over tit. I always needed an assistant to stand on the back of it until it properly dug in.

We've never got ours to work without being 'steered' into the muck, and ours has been a lot of different designs!
Depends what you are putting on it. We bent the blue-band-tube stick part. It has to be a big old thing to max a typical winch out.

Every home made one I've ever seen has been an abortion compared to the X-bow which is light, effective and easy to use. It's design is based on the pull pal.
Apart from serious play day recovery where it's used more often to anchor myself to recover someone else, I've only ever used one in competitions.

I've got a pair of these ( Vitara SWB ) Ground Anchor - Tee Stake
http://www.forgetec4x4.co.uk/
ideal to get me out of trouble out on my own, and easy to store with a big sledge hammer, and chain / shackles to link them together, all of which I carry anyway
not quick but simple 1 man job, get you home
