Not sure whether this has been discussed here before, but I recently have had a close look at the effectivity of the 6 Niva magnetic oil drain plugs in my possession, and I was quite surprized after having done some tests. In short - having done some easy tests, it became clear that ;

1. Three of the magnetic drain plugs in my posession have completely lost all magnetic properties.
2. Two of the magnetic drain plugs only has very weak magnetic properties.
3. Only one magnetic drain plug still has magnetic properties which can be described as "reasonable (?) / almost acceptable".

While it is common knowledge that magnetic oil drain plugs do loose it's properties during excessive heating conditions, I assume that the drain plugs in my posession has been exposed to severe heat in the past - so I decided to replace all magnetic plugs with high quality Dimple plugs from Motorsports Developments, Blackpool, UK. Some Pics:

Six original plugs in my posession:

Only ONE of the six plugs still has some sort of manetic properties - the heaviest object which I could put my hands on, and that it could hold, was a tiny pop rivet:

Magnetinc drain Dimple plugs from the UK:

Testing the Dimple drain plug - although this pic is not very clear, the new plugs prooved to be extremely powerful - probablyly at least more that a 1000 times more suitable for my Niva...

I also had to buy one stage one, and one stage two 22 x 1.5 tap to re-thread all drain holes - beacause the Dimple plugs are paralel- threaded.

Moral of this post - check out all those magnetic Drain plugs on your Niva properly, it might have lost all magnetic properties already...

As I've got a Difflock drain plug on my SIII LR, I use one of these on the rear of my sump.

Two interesing videos about the Dimpel magnets, with interesting comments about drain plug magnets in general:

I initially decided to order these magnets for my Niva's diffs, gearbox and transfer box, but then decided to order one for the engine sump as well.
