Scotland, N. Ireland and Wales all seem to want to independance, perhaps thats what makes them seem less British to the English.

A small minority of NI residents want to be part of Ireland. The majority are very happy with the status quo and are happy to be British with devolved powers.

As I understand Andy Murray will not have a vote in the referendum.

As for the other matter, can you show an instance where an English sports person has had their 'British' credentials questioned in a similar situation as Welsh, Scots or Irish? I can't think of one!

I haven't seen any of the other nations have that question put to them. Do you have any examples? It's not something I look out for, but I'll see what you come up with. If it is in the context of the referendum, then it is an interesting question, but essentially meaningless.

You seem to be inferring something, but I'm not sure what.

At the risk of annoying the man with the big gun

What do you call someone from the United Kingdom? British or have the northern bog trotting tater munchers decided to be United kingdomians?

For Scotland & the question on Independence the only Poll that will matter is the Referendum being held on the 18th September 2014.

That will be people with the right to vote that can be bothered to turn out making their opinions known.

Propably worth paying no attention to any Polls paid for or published beforehand by people with an agenda or not and asking anybody their opinions, regardless of whether they have a vote on the Polling day.

Andy Murray has bought himself a pretty nice Hotel near Stirling & Gleneagles in time for the Ryder Cup & the Commonwealth Games, and near the Bannockburn events in 2014,
maybe he might just be Registered & have his right to vote.

The vast majority of people I speak to about it up here and entirely undecided about it. Most cannot see how it could possibly work long before you look at the finances. The SNP have done a good job in Government but can they run an independent Scotland?

The basic, undeniable truth is that the rivalry between the home nations should remain as friendly banter. Being different is good, regional identity is good marketing but anything more than Devolution diminishes us all IMO

The full title is: The Kingdom of Great Britain, also referred to as the United Kingdom of Great Britain

So British is quite correct - a person in the United Kingdom therefore should be referred to as British NOT UNITED KINGDOM Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

That'll be the Difflock Effect. The starting point of any discussion is no guarantee of the place it will end up.

BTW it's the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland Great Britain is the big bit, NI is the smaller bit on the North end of the Island of Ireland which stayed part of the UK when the Republic of Ireland gained independence in the early 20th century. But you guys all know that, right?

A key question is, why is it only people in Scotland who will be able to vote. Everyone in th UK should be able to have their say if they want Scotland to become independant or stay in the UK, or depending on your view - keep Scotland or get rid of it. Either way there are huge implications. However, any ballot should have a "Don't give a toss" option.

For me the big issue is will I still be able to support my favourite Scottish distilleries in the same way that I do now?

Cheers,
J
