Just to add another take on it, if you used agricultural or other components you could build a serious hillbilly wagon for the same cash if you didn't confine yourself to winch challenge and 36" tyres. Drumclog or Lamancha are close, fun, safe and will let you in with more or less anything and it won't take you long to meet folk with more private playgrounds without any restrictions.
Look at the current UK challenge scene and the likes of Jim Marsden's truck should give a good idea of what you can do with a Land / Range Rover type vehicle or Mitsimog for something different but about as capable as it gets. You'd be looking at like Richard said of about 25k -30k to be in that league. Are you serious about it?
Neither vehicle uses Land Rover axles.
You could sink ten grand into your Range Rover and still go out and buy a cheaper Unimog which would be a more capable road legal vehicle than a Rangey with fancy running gear and a few winches if you just get away from the challenge or competition aspect.
I've got some portals, some 16.00' (52") tyres and the summer off. I haven't started building yet but I'm sniffing around looking for other ingredients and ideas.

Hey Steve, Nooooooo!!!!
Well, not yet anyway. It's way too much fun and with the body off is better off road than anything I could do with a Landy Chassis.
I've got 3 spare TRM 2000 portal axles which I thought about putting under the Volvo and stealing it's axles for something else but now I got rid of one of my big toys I don't need it's spare wheels any more so TRM portals with 16.00 x 20 tyres is the basis of whatever gets built.
I've had the axles for ages but been overseas and never had time to do anything with them. They're not the best to be fair but should be easy to work with.
They've come off ones the same as the second truck in the picture. The first has portals too, you cant' really go back to straight axles once you've had them and it's all tree stumps round me which can be a real pain. Always something to winch off though!!
