Hi all now I'm going to keep this short.

I'm having a roll cage built and think i'm going to use blueband. I mainly do greenlanes but want that added insurance plus the wife says I must have one!

All I really want to know is what sort of price should I pay and can anyone recommend where to get it. I live in south east Cornwall.

If not can you tell me exactly what to ask for. I have no experience with metal and grades etc.

I think I want 45 x 2.5 but should I be using 48.8 x 3.2???

48.7x3.2 is MSA spec, but if you don't plan on competing then that doesnt apply to you however its probably a good size to go for, they must use that spec for a reason.
As for price theres too many variables, get some prices and see what you think!

Cool cheers, not planning on competing. Greenlaning mainly with the odd pay and play. I want something safe but don't want to go over kill.

I just read on another post that 45 x 2.5 is more than adequate for a vitara but as mention above 48.8 x 3.2 is MSA approved but over kill for a vitara. I'm new to this and if unsure would rather go over kill than under gunned.

I just want to be safe but as light as possible.

It is NOT overkill for any vehicle!!
The MSA spec is there because it can take the loadings for an incident involving any vehicle. The weight of the vehicle is only part of the calculation for the cage material.

We have been having on-going discussions at the MSA Cross Country Committee regarding ROPS. As has been said above the MSA spec is the MINIMUM acceptable based on experience and risk.

However, the current regs are based on the requirements for vehicles competing in speed events. Work is currently being undertaken on whether this is actually a suitable spec for challenge type vehicles some of which can now weigh anything up to 3 tonnes.

In my opinion, if something is worth doing it's worth doing right so I would be going with the MSA spec even if you're not going to be competing.

Cheers for the replies all. I think I'll go for 48.7 x 3.2 blue band or if feeling really flush I'll go for 45 x 2.5 CDS, I like the idea of it being seamless.

I have a number for a local workshop who specialize in this sort of thing. I'm going to call him today and have a chat.

I'm hoping I never need it but if I do I want it to hold up.

I will keep you posted if I have any luck with the workshop.

45 x 2.5 is enough for a vit? And rear hoop should be enough if you don't expect to roll it and it has a cab (already has a designed-in roll over protection) I did a scaffold tube rear hoop for a shorty vit and it was well over size. But there wasn't a worry of it failing Shocked

But, if you expect to roll it, like challenge or trial, it wants to be a full cage, either inside or out. Outer is good as you are unlikely to hit your head on it Very Happy

Required strength is about energy, so slow rolls don't need so much roll bar as a 60 mph flip. But a good cage and a good seat belt will massively increase the chance of survival. And most folk need to be in work monday morning Wink

I'd go over-size (and do) Laughing
