I just bought a winch bumper and thought I may as well fit a winch to it. What sort of pull rating does a winch need to have for light/moderate off-roading?

Any particular brands to go for if I'm looking at the cheaper end of the market or second hand?

deffo don't get anything less than 8000lbs

the 12000 & 13000lbs winchs on ebay are good for the price get one with synthetic rope if you can as steel cable is dangerous

What sort of price should I look at? I'm thinking something reasonable quality, but not top end either

You can get a lower powered winch, but you will have to pair it with a snatch block when you use it. It will increase the power, but decrease the speed. Depending on the sort of off roading you do that could be a cheaper, and adequate solution.

a few aspersions have been cast which are quite frankly wrong here.

3000lb is enough to pull a vitara.. 6000lb will be enough to pull a vitara out of a foot of mud, and up a 30degree slope (i have seen it done many times by a few friends whom have a 3500 ATV winch on the back, and a 6k on the front)..

9000lb is the sweetspot between price, and power, new Tmax winches can be had for very reasonable prices have a look in the 4x4 section, there is a very recent discussion on them). Also look at champion winches,

http://forum.difflock.com/viewtopic.php?t=73695

with regards to steel cable, it is no more dangerous than synthetic if used with the respect it deserves, but is markedly more dureable and wont fray if winching over rocks for example.

if you get a steel cable, get a winch blanket they are cheap and extremely effective at absorbing the energy stored in the cable should it snap

ensure people are clear of the swing radius (assuming it snaps off at the hook on the end of hte rope, this is effectively the length of the pull, plus a few meters)

the only benefit to going for more rating is the fact that you will be able to pull faster.. get 6000 or 9000lb and you are laughing..

good point to note that a vitara with one occupant and a full tank of fuel probably weighs around 2550lbs

I agree with Toseland - wire is no more dangerous than synthetic if used properly, for me the biggest advantages are weight (synthetic weighs much less than steel) and ease of handling, but as has been noted it's not as durable against chafing and so on. I have and use both, sythetic for light use or good clean conditions and switch to steel if the conditions are rough and abrasive such as rock and so on.

Also when calculating how much pull you need remember that you rarely are 'lifting' the full weight of the vehicle - a straight line pull even when bogged is usually much less that the weight of the vehicle. If necessary you can use blocks to reduce the speed and increase the pull if you need to.

Cheers - P

It is surprising the amount of force needed on a winch to pull around what is a 'light' item. I use winches on the baclk deck of a ship, and friction, slope, and so on all take a toll, and often far more than folks realise.

this is a good .pdf about winching.

The PDF is common sense. But it does say to go for a winch that is 1.5 times the vehicles gross weight. Meaning that a 4500 lb winch is fine for a Vitara!

Are Superwinch ok? Devon4x4 have discontinued them, maybe a bad sign.

My brother has a superwinch rated at 13.5. It is fitted to an SJ, so a bit of overkill. If it was me, I would get something 4.5 as you say, and throw a snatch block in as well. Should cover all bases, (and let you winch round corners!).

each to there own i suppose but for a little bit more cost to get a decent size winch why bother getting something that you will have to use a snatch block all the time for & half the speed just don't make sense to me but thats my opinion & everyone does things differant i suppose

As I said, it depends on your use. If you are knee deep in sheep poo and angel delight, then get a nice big one. If it will be very occasional, I don't see the need to go A-Team, when Tesco security guard will suffice.

I'll look into prices and decide on that basis. At least now I armed with some opinions to help me choose. Thank you!

I've just bought one of these which I am more than happy with given the price.

http://www.winchmax.co.uk/acatalog/Winches.html

Don't know why D4X4 have dropped Superwinch. I have used Superwinches as my main winches for years and can't fault them.

Only reason I opted for the Winchmax is that this will only be used occasionally and I couldn't justify the extra cost
