|
|
|
A Niva owner has mentioned an oil leak at the Gearbox output flange some time ago at atnother Forum. Aparantly the oil is seeping through between the Output Shaft and Flange splines.
My Gearbox has been rebuilded, but at the time when it has been removed, I have also noticed a severe oil leak at the Output Flange. At the time I thought that the rear oil seal was leaking only, but since I saw the above mentioned comment by another owner, I wondered whether the oil was not seeping through between the splines as well.
Is there any proved method to prevent the Gearbox oil from seeping through between the mentioned splines ?

Hello,
I've encountered this before on other vehicles. Often the root cause is a poor fit on the splines. However, one fix is to thoroughly clean the splines on the shaft and flange and refit with Locktite thread seal, torquing up as normal. Leave it for 24hours to set. The flange will come off again!
regards

I agree with the above.
A common problem on the nivas and lada boxes in general is that the rear output nut becomes loose and you lose gears. While this nut is loose there is massive scope for them splines to wear against each other. Unfortunately it's going to be a transfer box out job and locktite those splines. You could also fit a dowty washer to it which has a rubber seal to help things?

I think the splines at the Transfer Box rear output flange could also cause oil leaks as well. I,ve got two Transfer Boxes in my posession, and in both cases there are quite a bit of "play" at the rear output Flanges.
I think the idea behind this design has been that one bearing (only) at the outer end would be sufficient to keep the output shaft firmly in position, while the Splines at the inner end is suppose to be a tight fit - to support the beating at the outside obviously.
I've got a feeling that the rear Propsshaft (which runs at an angle) is causing additional strain to the rear output Flange (Transfer Box). Due to this additional strain the aluminium bearing outer ring Housing, as well as the splines eventually wears out - therefore the "play" - which could also cause oil leaks.
