Evening all,

I been asking a couple of questions lately about sj's and vits and now I've been doing a lot of thinking about what I want from the truck in question but me being me I have another question or two.......

Right then I want a comp truck back to do winch challenges in , I've have had the 90 's jeep tj's and traybacks all up to a reasonable challenge spec and to be honest the thought of another landy bores me to tears as every man and his dog uses them in comps and I want something different,
My only real commitment is to the finished weight of it as my trailer has a absolute max load of 1650kg as its is plated to two ton over all so I am pushing my luck a little but I can help by taking the sides and ramps off and put them in my van!

My idea and please feel free to advise or correct me...... Vit with 1.9 td engine , ldv box for lower gearing , sj t box and land rover axles( I know lr axles are not great but they are easy to maintain and get spares for ) maybe change r and p's if I really have to , and maybe some Ashcroft internals at a later date , also stretch the wheel base a little, not sure how much as I don't have all the bits in front of me to play with........ Winches back and front with cage etc etc ....... Any thoughts on this?

Also what do you think a vit with the 1.9 td lump in would weigh ? A whitbread buggy ends up at around 1650-1700 kgs with two gp's and half a tank of fuel so I really feel I must be lighter , Also the lighter it is the more simple I can keep winches etc

Like I say it's all just a thought but we got to start somewhere and I find asking different people give a better end result!

Many thanks , Chris. Very Happy

solid axles will push it up with the TD unit..

the GWV of a vit is around 1000kg, standard, add another 100 with the TD lump, fuel, driver and shiney bits and you are looking at 1500kg i think

if you want to go out there, and maintain your IFS for some nice clearance at the front, then there are some links to a hilux IFS setup with teh hilux rear axle..

doing this as he says in one of the posts, only added abotu 20kg to the front end.. which isnt to shabby

thats fair enough, but its something massively different..

current thinking here is SAS is the way to go, however IFS gives, in my opinion, better control both on and offroad, as the wheels on the front at least are truely independant, also gives yyou much better ground clearance, that you simply wont get with SAS unless you fit portals,

mine currently has over 13inches at the front clearance, on standard tyres (insa turbo spec tracs measuring 29inches top to bottom)

stick 31s on there and its monster..

Yes IFS reacts better at speed but in general in challenge scenarios and extreme offroad you'll get better performance, weight balance and traction with a solid axle. There is also more unsprung weight, something that you want offroad, you will never get the same amount of ground pressure from an IFS system than you will with a solid axle unless you use some sort of forced articulation. No factory fitted IFS on 4x4s are designed with maximum offroad performance in mind either; rather road comfort and easy/cheap production.

As for ground clearance, yes on level ground and when the suspension isn't articulating you get better clearance but this soon disappears as soon as the suspension compresses on one side, go over a bump at speed and both sides will compress moving the chassis closer to the ground. yet with a solid axle the amount of ground clearance under the axle will stay consistent during articulation, you lift a wheel and the axle will rise with it. So saying that IFS has better ground clearance is not correct.

I'm not saying that ifs doesn't have any advantages either but you would need to build the ifs from scratch to build one that truely performs well offroad.

Defo don't want ifs as i think it will be out of my comfort zone fabbing wise, I've really looked into this with some depth and every thing I wants point to a whitbread buggy but I just fancied something different......... Have I really got to go to the dark side again? Sad

Laughing don't worry I wasn't saying to for ifs at all.

I say be different and build what you want! Everyone has whitbread buggies so why follow the crowd, It will be easier to keep the weight down if you stick with a suzuki based buggy as well, won't really make much of a difference if you choose either an SJ or a bit as well, the basis are similar weights and I would imagine you'll be getting rid of a lot of the bodywork.
