Are you looking to be using the vehicle "mostly offroad"?

Hi,
It wil be used every weekend throughout the winter off road when shooting and beating, but the rest of the week it will be on road.
I will also be using it for rutted/rocky traks in Ireland and obviously the motor way to get there. I want decent off road ability as ive been caught out before, even in my Grand vitara (99 plate) dont mind a bit of a rough on road drive as my main car is currently a sportrak.

What's wrong with the Sportrak?
I doubt the Terios will go anywhere that a Grand Vitara won't. Would you be looking at the first or second generation Terios?

They have a very low first gear but that's about it as far as a low range 'box goes. First is really quite low, certainly low enough for light-mid off roading but after that you'd need a proper box in there.
The new shape, MK2's have a centre lock as standard. The "S" models I believe come with a rear LSD which makes a massive difference to their capability.
You can't lift them (and use them onroad, the front is McPherson strut so you'd be putting lots of camber onto the tyres) so you're limited to tyre selection if you want to improve them over standard.
The MK1's do 35mpg, low 40's on the motorway when sat with the trucks and the MK2's are essentially the same motor with an extra 200cc. Our Fourtrak does 32mpg pretty much everywhere and would be a much more capable off road car without compromising the on road manners. A well spec'd one, looked after in standard trim with air con and a decent head unit would be about level with creature comforts, reliability, more capable and it's where i'd be putting my money.
