Little toe is gone and the trialer is running well and doesnt need any work except some minor fettling (when does that ever stop? ) so it must be time for another project right?
This is going to be used for King of the Valleys in a couple of years and before then safari's, well thats the plan. the hitch is the budget! there wont be any ARB's or £3000 winches on this one unless they turn up in the scrap
I'm starting with what i know, another rangerover chassis and axles, although in the future i might go down the route of salisburys or another set of patrol axles. the transfer box is not yet settled, it will be either a suzuki sj 410 box, or a landrover lt230 with a rakeway remote tranfser box mod, gonna start with the SJ box i expect as i have it and if it doesnt take the abuse i will look at the landrover possibility. The engine and gear box are from a volvo 940, this is a turbo 4 cylinder petrol and 4 speed auto, its had a few tweeks to the boost and may get more, although the axles will need beefing up first as about 250 bhp as standard will see off landy axles! Im not sure on rubber yet i doubt i will go above 33" as its not neccassery imo and id rather have good gearing.
The body will be Defender/series 2/ bowler ish, well thats the plan! it will have a series 2 grille and lights and wings styled the same as my trialer, they arnt that pretty but they do the job well. JonG1 is designing a cage that follows landrover lines rather than being internal or external and mine will be the second done to help test the design, however we have talked about it and im going for a 110 van ish look with the full back end however the panels will be removeable for better visibilty if trialling etc. i wont cut the back end completely as there's no need, instead it will have a proper rear crossmember a couple of inches shorter than a standard 90.
Provided nothing else takes up my time i will get started next weekend, heres the Volvo
its nearly too good to break!
but worth it for this!

nobby has been blowing them up regularly & has now gone the toyota Tbox route

have you checked the regs in regards to compsafari as the turbo may bump you up a class depending on what CC the engine is,

Yep and Its 2.28/1 in low Box 1/1 in hi i bet
If you have the gearbox too maybe you could graft that straight up to the motor.
Good luck im watching as always.

The only trouble i have with the toyota transfer box is that it isnt a stand alone unit. i only have the transferbox, it's the box off of little toe and so i dont have the gearbox unfortunatly.
cheers

"I'm starting with what i know, another rangerover chassis and axles"
In that case, surely you would be nuts not to use the LT230? It looked like it self-supported last time I tinkered? Surely you can run to a bought input shaft?
Swap the props to move it all back, have a short input prop on 100" and fannys your uncle
Or put it another way; if that shaft is beyond the penny's, comps will break you (no offence intended there mate, but that comp event eats stuff. The cash is why we stopped in the 90's)

Yeah i ptobably will run that box but i liked the look of the sj box but if it will just eat them then i will have to chose between lr and toyota, as the toyota is the same as the lt230 in the stand alome respect i will probably go with the lt and bought bits... i just prefer not to buy too much.
I know the comps are loads more money and i wont be doing every one might even just do a few, and i know it wont be overly competetive as i dont have that kind of money but i think it would be great if we could get there without having everything bought or made for it.
How are you getting on with the new hydraulic winch?

I have unrealised expectations from it, due to the weather
May get to check it out the end of Feb at a play day? I think it will do okay, as it makes up for any quality-risk via 10% more size.
In the mean time I will drain the rear diff and try a better breather/wire-duct combo.
It don't ever stop
I wonder if that rakeway shaft fits in through the PTO hole for a rear engine build?

weather has been weird, we had snow then rain then snow, in a day pain in the ass as ive had exams so still have to go in to school
okay im interested to see how it does as it looks a really neat winch
oh right i need to do the oils on mine judging by the water level in the air filter
it might do, not really had a look, its on this page: http://www.rakeway.co.uk/page12.html

Look at lada niva transfer boxes, divorced, full time 4x4 with a locking centre diff and they used to be rallied with up to 300bhp with no problems.

but you would need a front axle with the diff on the passenger side to work with a niva tcase (jeep cherokee etc)

Cheers although after you saying that kind of wtites off that idea, i have funny angles on the prop of my trialler and that is only really low speed work.
I had a look at the rakeway adaptor and im going to have a look at some landy boxes sitting around and see what does need doing. I might end up buying the parts but i want to try and see what i can do first.

Hi, sorry no updates for a while, had a few setbacks (namely replacing a steering box on my trialer, as the old one gave up halfway through the day... )
once the chassis was in the workshop, i set to cleaning it up!
After that i painted with red oxide, and shortened the rear, it willl probably end up slightly shorter, but wanted to leave some room to play with. i shortened the front to the first xmembember, the same as the trialer.
When that was fully dried i got the JCB yellow out, safe to say it needs another coat!!
So now the chassis is nearly finished, well until the cage is done, im going to put some time into sorting the wiring on the volvo lump... not looking forward to it! but then the engine and box can go in and i can get started on the transfer box and... axles! almost certainly going to change to Nissan Patrol axles now, y61 the same as the front of my trialer. This is because of the standard spec of them and im starting to get a good stockpile of spares, incase i manage to kill something, just a case of getting the axles now.

Comp Safari Noah!!
£400 should do it for the weekend all told with AWDC and SCOR are not going to be much cheaper. But I would thoroughly recommend it. My last outing was Walters last year when the car went bang on the second run and due to the rebuild, a new job and trialing commitments...safari went on the back burner.
Good luck mate
You going to the 40th West Harptree at Easter ? as would be good to see ya

I know its a massive jump in costs and time etc not just on the vehicle but also the event as you say, and i dont mind that, its just if i can make it rather than buy it then id rather do that, there are going to be things that i cant get around and will have to buy, and compared to most cars out today it will probably be an old slow dinosaur. But if its fun and costs less than any other car on the day then i think it will be worth it.
Yeah it will be a slow build aswell because its about the last most important thing at the moment.
Yeah i am going to.the easter weekend Nick cant wait

Hi , nice to see a proper budget built. been thinking for getting back into a few comp safaris my self (dream to be honest) not about the winning or the speed its fun per mile.
could spend £150 on a nite on the town so 400 every few months could be found if that's what you want to do.
oh the single life lol
good luck keep the updates coming

before you go making seperate transfer box etc i have to tell you that your volvo has a zf 4hp22 auto box ,this is the same box as a disco 1 auto 3.9 so swap a few parts on the back of the auto box and you are bolted up to lr transfer box.only reason i have spotted this is because i have been reaserching putting a bmw 2.5tds with zf auto into a 90.looks to be reasonably straight forward but i am no expert. hope this helps phil.
